Question about wacky Kenwood Face

Hi, I have a Kenwood KDC-V6017 CD player in my blazer. It has a detachable face that manually rotates. It works fine but the illumination of the face is wacky. If the face is in operational mode it doesn't illuminate and shows no display. However, if I flip the face down and slightly tilt it toward the reciver it will illuminate. The CD players works fine and all options work but I can't figure out why, without warning, the illumination of the face won't work properly. Any suggestions?

Does it only illuminate when its tilted or when you press any button it will illuminate then shut off? If this is the case then ur HU has a black out mode which makes the cd player use less power since its just black. You can try holding the display button in to get rid of this if this HU has one. I cant find any info for this HU on kenwoods site. So if you have a manual check on how to get rid of this. If this isnt the case i dont kno what to tell you except wait for one of our golds or sumone else to respond.

sounds like it could be a loose connection. If it is a loose connection, it might be inside the HU too.

i had a similar problem there was some crap stuck in the connectiion between faceplate and HU try using a lent free cloth or new dry tooth brush to clean this.

remove the faceplate and rub a pencil eraser over the contact points. Carbon will build up after a while and cause this...

These are tough to diagnose and repair. If cleaning the external contacts don't do the job, the issue may well be in the display part of the HU module. For some reason, the display may be losing power to the EL display or other faceplate functions.

I have never done one, but my guess is that if the faceplate can be carefully opened, look for poor wiring connections on the PC board and external circuit tabs. A bad solder joint, a loose power connector to the board or a "dirty board" can cause these issues over time.

Clean the PC board with rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush. Then inspect all solder joints. They should be bright, shiney and tight to the board. If you find dull gray joints, retouch them with a little flux and 60/40 solder. A small dot of fresh solder, is all you need.

If you have a background in PC board diagnostics and repairs... you may have success. If NOT... best to send the unit in for repairs and let a skilled Tech do the work for you.
