Would I be able to run a 12" Alpine TypeR on this amp? I have a Rockford Fosgate 201s Punch amp (600w Max, tested at 275w RMS) I would have to use a 2+2ohm sub wired in series right? Power Handling Capacity (Peak) : 1000W Power Handling Capacity (RMS) : 300W My amp is only 25watts off the RMS rating of the Type R, but i've heared that the Type R's are power hungry. So any thoughts on this possible setup would be great. Also my box is sealed about 1.1cu ft Thanks, Murph Replies (3) swez on 03/23/2004 10:55:37 The SWR-1221 is your best match here. This is a 2+2 DVC configuration and is rated at 300 RMS. Wire coils in series for a 4 ohm load and bridge the RF amp to mono. Gee Murph, I think we have discussed this one about 6 times already? FROWN Specifications: SWR 1221D Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 300 watts and a total peak power rating of 1000 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 150 watts and a peak power rating of 500 watts. Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.7 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 0.85 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.75 cu/ft to 1.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.25 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 4" diameter x 13" long port should be used with the 1.25 cu/ft enclosure. Your sealed box will net better low end bass, but it may lose some SQ and power handling ability in a 1.1 cf sealed box. Can try it as is and if too boomy and not precise bass, then adding blocks of wood inside the present enclosure will bring the cf number down and clean up the bass SQ. Can also add a port as noted and fill the box w/ 16 oz., of poly-fill. This will net higher SPL than sealed, but power handling may drop on this sub before over excursion is noted. If you port, listen carefully and use a sub sonic filter... (~30 Hz) to protect sub from ultra low bass below tuning freq. This will allow you pick up ~+3 dB more SPL from your present setup. Since you have a modest amp and medium size sealed enclosure, the more efficient your sub is, the more SPL you can get from this enclosure. Porting will also add SPL to the setup, but if sealed trunk mounted sub here, an opening to the cabin will notably increase bass presents in the vehicle as well. To test that theory, open the doors, crack the trunk a few inches and step back about 10-25 feet to rear of car... Do you hear a difference in bass now? Try it...and see. That was a real eye opener test for my sedan (sealed trunk) and a very modest sub setup too. (300 RMS, dual 10's) I could tell when HU amp was distorting on mids/ highs and adjusted sub amp gain for the cleanest, but loudest bass I could get w/o excess distortion... full range. Swez Murph on 03/23/2004 13:37:44 Do you know if my amp is 2ohm stable? I noticed on the test sheet it says "tested 275w RMS @2ohms" But I can't find anything on the RF website about if it is 2 or 4 ohm stable. I'm assuming its at least 4ohm. Murph P.S. Swez I know we have gone over this a millions times lol, just want to make sure I get it right! swez on 03/24/2004 20:56:51 Yeah... I understand Murph! This amp is pretty modest power for a sub application. Rockford Fosgate Punch 201S 50W x 2 Car Amplifier Specifications: Dynamic Power Rating (measured at 14.4V) Bridged Into A 4-Ohm Load: 200 watts x 1 Per Channel Into A 2-Ohm Load: 100 watts x 2 Per Channel Into A 4-Ohm Load: 50 watts x 2 NOTE: This amp is not 2 ohm stable in bridged mode. A 4 ohm sub is your best bet when bridging. =============================================== The SWS-1241 sub you have now, is probably well suited to this amp. If you want more bass... a bigger amp and beefier sub will help. You may also consider porting your current box to get a few more dB gain from this sub. NOTE: Recommended Vented Box Volume: "The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 1.25 cu/ft to 2.00 cu/ft. No port sizes are listed by the manufacturer". We would have to crunch some numbers to get a port dimension that will make this sub sound better. Finally, if you deside to move up to a larger bass engine, the RF amp is still useful as a full range amp for your mids/highs. This amp nets 50 watts RMS per speaker when used in 2 ohm stereo mode. Much better than a HU amp. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
