VOLTAGE

Hey Guys,

A friend of mine has two amps that he has just installed in his wifes car and has a single 8 gauge wire from the batt to the sub amp. The second amp is wired with a jumper from the sub amp as is the ground and rem wire.

The sub amp that gets power from the batt is a bazooka ela 300.1 and the second amp is a Bazooka el 75.4.
He also has the 75.4 piggyback to the 300.1.Can you guys see any issues with this wiring setup?

Here is what his total install is:

Bazooka ela 300.1 with 2 mtx thunder svc 10's(2 ohm load
Bazooka el 75.4 with 2 MA audio hk65 6.5's and 2 tweets.
The reason I am asking is because it sounds like junk to me (my opinion only,he thinks its awsome).

thanks,
mike COFFEE

The ELA 300.1 is rated at 300 RMS@ 4 ohms, 400 RMS @ 2 ohms. This is fused at 60A.

The EL 75.4 I cannot find on Bazooka web site. They have an ELa 60.4 which is fused at 40A. The 75x4 would be fused at ~50A.

Need a #4 power feed and ground here. The #8 cannot feed both amps adequately. Wire will heat up and possible melt or short. Could cause a fire too. Tell your friend to install a 50A. fuse at the battery for now. If the amps draw too much power for the wires, the fuse will blow... a temporary safety valve until he can install #4 wire kit.

#4 power line to Sub amp, then piggy back a #8 wire to 4 channel. A D-block is the proper way to do this. #4 input, #4 to sub amp, #8 to 4 channel. Fuse the new system at 100A at battery.

LOL...
Any upgrade that someone does to their audio system will keep them happy for a month or so. Or until they hear something better, then they will be on the search for 'better sound'. I have heard people testify that they have the cleanest sound period now that they put in the new [insert brand & model #]. After spending 20 minutes in the Diamond Denali, I was brainwashed/brain scrambled.. and now I have to have Diamond products.
You are right about the wiring though, wires that are too small actually do affect the sound significantly. As the power wires heat up they create more resistance, which in turn only creates more heat, which results in voltage drop and amperage gain.
I would approach him carefully though, some people know it all, and don't like to be told they are wrong. Ask him in front of his wife if he is going to upgrade his wiring to avoid the risk of fire while she is driving around in her car... just kidding. If he isn't interested in spending $4.00/ft on power wire from a stereo shop, there are alternatives. My cousin used 1/0 high strand welding lead for his power wire and it was either right at or under $1.00/ft.
4 gauge would be much cheaper, I am sure.

Just give him the facts... #8 wire is designed to carry ~50A worth of current. The system mentioned pulls almost 2x that, when he cranks it up. Using a 50A fuse at the battery will prevent a total melt down and maybe a fire.

If that is adequate for his/her listening habits... leave it be. But if fuses are blowing frequently... go to #4 gage power and dual #8 power and grounds. One to each amp.

cpl, would this be the same cousin that used 10/2 house wire for speaker connections.lol...lol...a little over the top for me but that is just ahoot!!! I laugh every time i think about it..its good stuff..lol.. as far as my friend goes he has agreed that he doesnt want to hurt his wifes pride and joy so I think he is going to buy a #4 kit @ wally world today..(I used a printout from swez's repley on this topic and he was like clay after he read it..thanks swez..I hope that it would not be considered plagisrism.) thanks fellas and keep up the good work..brbrmike COFFEEbrbrps. cpl I check out the diamond web site after i read your post..wow! if looks were sound that denali would be something to admire..dream the audio dream..brpss. swez i guess you can tell i also live by the java...COFFEEbr

Only way... to get through the day man! COFFEE

Yeah, am glad your friend took the not so subtle hint... but when pulling that much current, need that #4 wire kit. No prob sharing the info... is free to all. I just wish some would read and heed more often... alas... not in this world huh? GRIN
