i recently purchased a diff car(92 cavalier)and put my system into it. i bought a 180 amp berretta alternator an put it in. now to my question, adding more batteries, does it help? because in my line of thinking the batteries do nothing but start the car, cuz when u unhook the pos+ post the car keeps going.

i discussed this with some guy at the alt shop, he said when your alt cant put out enough power the amps will pull power off your spare batteries thus decreasing the load off ur alt alowing your alt to keep up with the booom.???? i dunno to confusing i just dont wana waste more money on batteries again

Ps. anybody know about hydrogen dischared from batteries? my father told me about special rooms at work, where they store batteries. sounds scary

lol, a 92 cavalier. I dont like the speaker locations in that car at all. dash 3 1/2s and 6x9s in rear, not very compatable for a very good system unless u do some modifications to the doors. well, another battery for your system is always a nice thing to have, but you may run into some problems as you might run into with any other modification that you have. I wouldnt worry about it, go ahead and get the battery if you feel you need it. and when you say more batteries, does that mean you have bought multiple batteries in the past for your systems?

Your Dad is right on hydrogen gasses... as a lead/acid battery charges, it does outgas hydrogen byproducts and these are potentially explosive. The answer to that issues is a Gel-cell battery design if you keep one (or more) in the trunk etc.

If you already have a 180A ALT., thats enough to run a few larger amplifiers. The ALT is part of the prmary electrical system. The battery and starter are the other parts of that system. The BAT is there for 2 reasons:

1. Stores energy for starting the car
2. Is a storage "buffer" for additional power when the ALT becomes over taxed and calls for more support (watts) from the battery

In your case, we don't have enough detail about your system, to give you much more detail. If your lights are dimming badly on deep bass hits, that is a sign that your system is robbing power from other devices that need voltage, but not getting it. There are a few simple ways to cure that... but would like to know what amps you have and how many amps of current they draw per each.

With that detail, then we can discuss your options.

right now i have 3 jbl 1200's an i have 2 of them hooked up to 4 crossfire bmf's. my lights dim pritty good on the long bass hits. in a couple of weeks my 4th jbl should be in and then it will be 1 per sub. think its 185 current draw per amp?

Max power draw on a single JBL 1200.1 is 114A. You have 3 now and a 4th on the way. So, we are talking 400 + Amps of current draw here. I am amazed that you still have an electrical system that works.

If you are into SPL Comps, most guys add a 2nd HO alternator and a bank gel cell Yellow Tops to feed the amps that much current. The primary Alt and battery run all car related electricals and the other parts mentioned, power the audio system. If this in something your budget can manage, you have a lot of work to do in order to sufficiently power all those amps.

A side note, JBL's are Class D amps and are much more efficient (80%+) than Class A/B amps. (~60%) You put in 1500 watts, get out 1200 + per amplifier.

In short, to get everything operating properly, will need a pretty hefty bank of batteries and a very High Output ALT... 300A plus will probably do the trick. Then too, 4/0 welding cable to feed the ALT power back to the batteries is probably a good idea as well.

Have fun,

Swez

PS You might get by with less ALT power for burp tones... but if you like to run at high SPL level around town as well... gotta upgrade the electricals and set a side a few hundred bucks for tickets as well.

yeah, i just went to court today for my ticket. it was 264 and i got it lowered to 50, so thats nice, only 5 hours of community service instead of 26, haha, yeah, just be careful around town with that kind of a system. My whole system is under 450 watts, and with the 4800+ that ur talkin about there, ur going to need some major upgrades.
