Optima Red vs. Yellow

Hey guys..

I plan on using the JBL 1200.1 on my Honda Prelude 01. My question is if I were to upgrade the batt, should I go for the red or the yellow top? I know the yellow top is recommended for high-drawing car audio systems. However, let's just say that if I was limited to the red tops (money issues) and was using the stock alt., would this batt be sufficient?

Thanks guys

Red top is designed for starter and general electrical support to stock electrical system. The Yellow Top is designed as a secondary battery that can take many deep discharge cycles and not fail like a typical OEM battery.

Could have some real electrical problems pending if you push that amp hard a lot at night. This amp draws a max of 114A. at full load, but nominal current draw is about 40-80A., depending on how loud you play it.

If your OEM ALT is 85A or more, you'll get by. If less than that, severe light dimming, battery drain and other issues may arise. You may want to upgrade your power wires from ALT/BAT, BAT/GND and grounding strap from engine to body. A #4 gage wire set is best here and double the grounding strap by adding a 2nd one.

Does your dash gage system have a voltage indicator? If not, you may want to get one that can plug into your lighter so you can monitor voltage output when using the system. If the voltage drop below 10 volts, the car will not run properly or just die altogether.

PS Check out NAPA as they have a house brand version of Optima batteries that are cheaper the OPTIMA brand name. Get the largest CCA rated battery you can fit into this car. (+800 CCA is good)

I would wait until I could afford the yellow top myself. I currently have a red top, but I am no where near the current draw that you are. My cousin has a die hard 1250CCA battery, and his lights almost go out when he cranks his JBL BP 1200.1, he also has an eclipse 4channel amp that pulls 50amps as well though.

Do it right the first time, otherwise you will be replacing brand new equiptment that just isn't hefty enough (the red top).

thanks for the responses guys..

I was wondering if anyone knows what the stock OEM Honda alternators are rated at? I'm having a hard time finding this number...

Looking up your vehicle on autozone's website, the only available alt for that vehicle is a 90amp. I would assume that is the factory replacement.
It should say on the alternator if you can get to it to see the sticker or plate.
