I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, and am going to mount MBQuart pce 216's in the front doors. The original speakers are 6x9, not 6 1/2. I will need to make a coustom mount for these speakers. Would plexiglass be the best bet for water resistance, or is this a no no. Also, if you have any suggestions for tweeter placement on this set up. Thanks Chad Replies (7) swez on 03/4/2004 23:40:22 Plexiglass or lexan should be fine if well fitted to door. I would think 1/4" stock material would be fine. Otherwise custom fiberglass pods would be even better. As for mounting the tweeter, up high on the door, aimed toward roof center would give best SQ. You can mount the crossovers on the inside door panels, but avoid the lower portion of the door as moisure gathers there. Swez ram1 on 03/5/2004 00:31:07 When I mounted tweeters on my Ford, I mounted them in the plastic piece at the top of the doorpanel, not sure about the new style Ram, but my 99 Ram had the same piece covering the mirror bolts. then dropped the wires down to the crossovers. Just be careful to keep the wires from being caught in the window track. asplundher on 03/5/2004 08:12:44 The sail panels are a excellent place for tweeters if you can use them. 1/4" plexiglass or lexan is fine but, I would apply some type of dampening material to avoid any colorations or vibrations. PE is offering some low cost dampening sheets for a good deal right now. Can use donut rings of MDF too and seal well to metal door frame. No rattles or colorations that way as MDF is so dense and cheap. Can make your own spacers if you have a router w/ circle jig or Roto Zip w/ compass guide. Just cut the outer ID first, then inner ID for your donuts. Swez uochronos on 03/5/2004 14:46:45 i went to the local plexi glass place when i did this and asked them for a 1/2 inch thick piece with wholes cut for my speakers and they hooked me up nice for a good price. i also asked them to use the most dense material they had... the peices where originaly 9 by 9 and i couldnt flex it at all. great stuff and i was very please with outcome ttocs on 03/7/2004 10:52:17 holy cow.. 1/2"? I have never used anything more then 3/8 " mdf myself... cplkittle on 03/8/2004 01:11:12 you can also get foam baffles for the speakers if you wish. We use them on almost every install. they are 1/4" flexible foam, and come in every speaker size available (except 4x10). They do wonders for the sound, plus they are waterproof.
