How can I improve my bass response?

Hey how's it going, brbrI recently bought a 12" Apline Type S single voice coil sub 250RMS 600Max, a Rockford Fosgate 201s Punch amp 600max 200Rms (Birth sheet tested at 275Rms @ 2ch. 4ohm). I am using an 8ga. wiring kit, and a sealed box. I am using my factory 5 1/4" speakers off my Kenwood KDC 2019 head unit. brbrMy question is I am thinking about changing my box to a ported one. Will this make my sub's low frequency's louder. Right now it sound good, however I would like it to sound a little more boomier. If you guys could give me some ideas on how to accomplish this that would be greatly appreaciated.brbrThanks,brMurph

Hey Murph, long time no see... welcome back!

What size box are you using for that sub now? If you go sealed or ported, here are the specs for enclosures:

Key Features:
KevlarŪ-treated pulp cone
3/4" Santoprene rubber surround
frequency response 26-1,000 Hz
power range 50-200 watts RMS
peak power handling 600 watts
sensitivity 89 dB
top-mount depth 6-1/2"
sealed box volume: 0.85-1.5 cubic feet
ported box volume: 1.25-2.0

Ported will give you more output and get lower bass as well, depending on tuning freq. But you'll need a sub sonic filter to block out freqs below tuning freq. For good SQ/SPL, go to the middle of the specs and port to ~35 Hz.

If sealed, don't go much above 1.25cf internal, no SS filter needed here.

PS A larger box will net more boom SPL, but less SQ. Listen carefully for cone breakup at high SPL's as the airspace may get too large to give good cone stability. You can shrink the box by adding a few 2x4's to knock down internal cf if needed.

another thing that will improve the sound would be to run the sub amp off of RCAs from the HU. I wouldn't recommend a $80 set of competition name brand twisted, oxygen free, solid platinum, illuminated, bla bla bla. Just a good set of RCA cables should do the trick. When you run them to the amp, keep them away from the power wire that runs to the amp. If the RCAs run parallel with the power wire there is a large chance that you will pick up some feedback.

Thanks swez & cplkittle for the helpful information.

cplkittle thanks for the info on RCA cables, however I am currently running RCA's from my head unit.

Thanks,
Murph

ok, got mixed up when you mentioned using factory speakers from HU, thought you tapped in to them for signal to sub amp.
