Spacer material, does it matter?

Hey I just got everything I need to install my subs 9my box just came in).

So far the only problem is that there's only about a 1/2 inch of space from the bottom of my subs to the bottom of the box.

Swez already suggested to use a 1" spacer, but I don't realy have any cutting tools, or any extra wood laying around.

Since the spacer is going on top of the box between the sub and box, does it realy matter what material I use?

Would layers of cardboard be good enough, as ling as the seal is tight?

Thanks,
Alan

I talked to Swez earlier about this..

You could try Walmart and in the arts and crafts section you could get some foam to place inbetween the box and subs for sizing "1 wide strip, 3/8 thick or so. Single side adhesive is best... sticky side to box, easy to remove subs"

hope you get your system worked out!!!

It's really, really nice!!

If cardboard isn't good cause of the possibility of air leakage, then is there anywhere that I can buy some spacers?

I looked all over online, but no luck.

cardboard could work also but you need to make it clean cuts so it can seal up right. Well also it might look a little funky with cardboard.. But hey! I had Duct Tape on my old sub holding it togather!brbrbrSwez, ADD, Zlnal, and I are in chat right now if you need more help!br

plexi glass well work too makes for a nice look also... in portland here we have several palces TAP plastics for one that well cut a perfect sircle of what ever diameter and thickness you want for about 5-10$ each mattering what plastic or other amterial you choose. wont work much better then whats listed abouce but if you want something that looks profesional this is a nice option.

Wonder if neoprene or cork gasket materials might work for you here. Can cut these with shears or a sharp razor knife. Layer them to the desired thickness, glue them together for best air tight fit. Can get this at most good auto parts stores. Often comes in sheets (like sandpaper)
and different thicknesses too.

Cardboard may not compress well enough to seal air tight.

Check around at some stereo shops. They should be able to make you one for pretty cheap if they don't have any laying around.

Any kind of material that will compress would not be good to use in my opinion. You will hardly gain any spacing. Some other type of material should be used.

With only a 1/2" of space between the box and sub magnet, it kind of alarms me about the amount of restriction of air used to cool the voice coil if the magnet is vented. That is a very shallow
enclosure.

Another layer of wood across the face would be a good option here to solve both problems. New holes for the drivers would have to cut though. Then it could be carpeted to match the rest, if the box is already is carpeted. It shouldn't cost much and the advantages would be worth it.

The plexi would look cool if you did it right. Otherwise if someone really came into my shop asking for that we could do it in 5 min and have ya on your way... Otherwise go to home depot with the correct deminsions and have a piece cut. You would have to cut the circles, no biggie. The magnet hits the back of the box? Is it a vented pole?

If a shop can do it cheap, and carpet it to match, I might do it that way.

The magnet isn't touching the back of the box, but there's only 1/2 of an inch of space between the two.

Don't know what you mean by vented pole, so I can't answer that one.

The only problem with buying some wood from a home improvement store is that I don't have any cutting tools to cut out the insides.

If a shop can't give me something as cheap as I want, then I might go with neoprene or cork gaskets like Swez said.

I want to get these bad boys in ASAP, but since it gets dark shortly after I get home from work, and I don't have a garage, I have to wait 'till tomoro (saturday).

Thanks for the replies guys.

If you look at the back of the sub's magnet, there may be a opening sometimes covered with a metal screen. This is used as a air passage way to help cool off the the voice coil (what drives the speaker). If it is obstructed or restricted, it won't work as efficiently as it supposed to.

At least have a shop give you a estimate refacing it or cutting the wood for you and you could do the rest.

not leaving enough space between the magnet and the box will cause the coil to over heat..

alanjlamore on 03/7/2004 17:38:24
OK, I finaly decided to go cheap and make the spacers myself.

I bought gasket material (rubber and cork). I bought 2 rolls of it so I'd have enough...well, it's not even close. I can make 3 rings for each sub and that equates to about a 1/4 of an inch raise SAD

I then decided that I'll just get a saw since I should have one anyway.

I found a couple of boards from an old shelf that're being use for extra support under our couch cushions. I'll cut that and maybe use the gaskets as well for a good seal.

Later on I might carpet it to make it look better.

Thanks for the help guys

Just note that you need about 1" of clearance between magnet/vent and back wall. A 3/4" board will do well here. You can still use the gaskets on top the wood to seal the sub well.

The best tool for this job is a ROTO Zip w/ compass tool. Cut the outer ring diameter first. Then, do the inner one using the same pilot hole. If you do it the other way around, no pilot hole to keep all stable and free hand cutting will net a sloppy job.

Just us some clamps to secure the wood as you cut and go slow. If you feed the bit too fast, it will over heat and snap. A few extra cutting bits are a good idea.
