Clarion DXZ545MP problems need advice.

Hello, I bought a new deck and speakers from crutchfield. I installed it in a 1982 Buick Electra Limited Diesel. I am using a DXZ545MP HU. I am using Kenwood KFC-6909 6"x9" 4-way Speakers in the back, and Kenwood KFC-4675C 4"x6" 2-way Speakers in the front. The problem I am having is that the HU only lasts about 30 mins before I lose sound. The HU still powers up but the sound is gone. I have lost 2 HU's to this problem so far. I used the wiring harness that was sent from crutchfield, double checked all the wires and they seem to all be correct. I opted to soldier connections instead of using cheap crimp on connections. What I need help with is how to troubleshoot this problems, the tech support at crutchfield is crap. I am going to be checking the ohm's of the news speakers, securing a better ground, and adding an inline fuses to see if I can blow a fuse instead of the deck. The HU usually plays fine at really low volume, but when ever I turn it up it seems to blow/short when I play it at higher lvl's. Another thing that is bugging me is that I get some distortion even at low lvl's. One song will sound fine no distortion, the next song will have tunz of distortion. The problem that bugs me is my 20+ year old factory system sounded better and was louder then the aftermarket setup I have. I need some help on things I can check to help clear up this problem. Thanks HAPPY

You may want to start digging into the speaker harness and measure the ohms load to each speaker here first. Should get a reading of close to 4 ohms on each. If you get a figure that is much lower than 4 ohms... Ie: <2 ohms, may have a partial or full short in one or more speakers.

On the HU, make sure you have a good body ground and while at it, measure the voltage the HU is actually getting at the harness. It should range between 14.5 to 12.5 volts. (engine on/off. Fuse the HU power wire at 10-15A. Better to blow a fuse than fry a HU.
