the MK audio 1.1 farad cap I bought has a warning on the back cautioning that missuse or wrong wiring can cause the cap to explode. I know that caps are now made to leak instead of blow up, but is it possible that this brand insn't made with that safety feature, or could it be a warning that all cap manufacturers have to have? This just makes the whole installing part a little scarier, not that I'll hook it up wrong, but I like having the safety feature just incase. Thanks, Alan Replies (4) swez on 02/27/2004 18:52:40 Yeah, more like an idiot warning... charge them right and never short them and all is well Swez cplkittle on 02/29/2004 10:09:48 They had warnings on coke bottles for a few years, not sure if they still do, after a toddler knocked one off the shelf, and it blew the cap off removing the kids genitals when it hit him. There are alot of things that can go wrong with anything.. Not that the warnings are to be taken lightly, but a little common sense goes a long way. The reason the cap has a warning is because some idiot probably got drunk and tried to charge the cap with a 120v house wire or something, and blew it up. The manufacturer has to cover his own butt sometimes, and it makes the product look dangerous. You will see warnings on chainsaws that say "do not try to stop chain with hands", or "do not smoke when refueling". bottom line, after you laugh at a few.. read the directions and all is good. alanjlamore on 02/29/2004 12:14:16 OK, that's what I was hoping. I just nevery heard of this brand before and since I got it from ebay, I didn't know how old it might be. Not sure if it was before the technology that made these guys leak for safety :) Thanks, I feel a little better about the install. swez on 02/29/2004 13:34:28 Most newer caps are designed to vent gasses if shorted. They will spew material out a sealed vent cover that is made to fail in the event of a short. However, better safe then sorry when handling caps of this size. They hold a fair shot of juice until discharged by a load like a 12 volt car lamp. Swez PS Never install a cap when it is charged! Discharge it first, then install and recharge.
