Capacitors and Alternators

I have recently installed 2 12" Diamond TDX subs in my car. They are powered at the time by a Rockford bd1000.1. I also recently purchased a Diamond D7104 to power my interior speakers but have yet to install it. This amp puts out 100w x 4. I'm using a Pheonix Gold 15 farad cap right now, and though it did tighten the bass, i'm afraid it's too big and almost acting as a second battery. I don't think my stock alternator can handle it much longer. Any advice on what I could do?

Your cap should be installed in parallel with your battery. It shouldnt have any problems as that just adds to the capacity (current) of the battery. So in fact it is all virtualy one battery. Same difference if you hooked up another battery in parallel. Your alternator is being strained by the strain from the amps and it is more likely that you are stressing the cap.

The best advice I can give is to trade in that amp or get a refund and buy or upgrade your alternator to a higher output one and upgrade your main electrical wiring (battery to alt, battery to chassis, and chassis to engine). That would basically solve all of your power problems.

Its like instead of buying engine upgrades to make a car go faster... your just putting octane boost in your gas tank for a temporary fix.

Yes... you said it bro! A Stiffening cap is a short term fix for a bigger problem in the making... need more power (watts) from the power supply of your car. (Ie: HO ALT and HD BAT)

The RF amp will pull over 85 amps of current at high output levels. Add that 2nd amp (60A. + ?) to the mix, and you're in serious power depeation mode. Your ALT is probably a 105A or maybe a 120A output version. In this case, a 175 - 200A. ALT and a large CCA rated battery are in order. (900 CCA or more)

Then, we have to upgrade the power wires here too. ALT/BAT, BAT/GND & GND/BDY. Here, you will want a min., of #4 gage wires, but #2 is better if you can fit it in. Your main power wire feed and ground will need to be #2 gage as well... back to the amps.

The hard part will be getting that much current out of a HO alt. These are not cheap. Ohio Generator & Stinger do these for many car models or you may seek the help of a local ALT winder to see what they can come up with.

I did an install with 2 cm3 10's. The owner of the stereo shop that sold them told me that they sounded about average for 12's... then he looked in the trunk..
