Looking for 5/4" midbass drivers

Hi folks,

Some of you search hounds may be able to give me a hand. I am looking to replace a pair of 5/4" woofers in a car. This Buick has 5/4" Comps now and the tweeters are fine. But I am looking for just the woofers to replace stock drivers. THINK

Price range: $60.00/set (tops)
Power: 50 - 60 watts RMS is adequate
Fs: somewhere near 60-80 Hz.
Bandwidth: 50 - 2,500 Hz.
Eff: 88 - 92 dB SPL@ 1w/1m.
Max depth: 3 1/8" (can stretch deeper if needed)

Does not have to be a main line brand... but a reaonably flat response curve in the 100 - 1000 Hz. band is desired.

Any thoughts... suggestions?
Thanks a bunch!

PS I did have Polks (5/4"s) in my last car and they were not bad at all. Only paid $50.00/pr. Had the tweeters I liked already. Looking for a similar deal.

Bump ^ 5.25" midrange/midbass driver suggestions please

Hummm, no help at all here huh? Well, I did find something that should meet the bill. Looking through PE web site, I found these Goldwood MB drivers that should meet most of my criteria. (lows eff. #'s though)

The Goldwood GW-S525/4 looks like a decent fit. Very cheap price, but 70 watts RMS, 4 ohms, 86.9 dB @ 2.83v/1m should do. Fs is 72 Hz., and depth is 3-1/8"

Not very efficient... but with my add on amp... (60+ x 4 @ 4 ohms)should be plenty of MB SPL. Usable frequency range is 50-5,000 Hz, but will cross them over at ~80 Hz - 3,500. The tweeter will do the rest and subs will take the below 80 Hz fine .

Should get them installed this weekend and will report on how they sound. Amazinly low price too... $7.60 ea. + S/H. What a deal... I hope!

Did I find a gem or a dog? We'll see!

You know, I started to suggest them. Most of the guys here like the more expensive stuff so I didn't bother. Anyway let me know for I've been very interested in those for a while. The only downfall I figure is trying to match a tweeter to that sensitivty level.

swez on 02/23/2004 20:39:36
Yea, normally I would have gone a bit higher up in scale as like CDT. But since this is not for my car, I figured I give these a try and see how they compare to OEM.

Have tweets already as Comps were in this car already. Not a great tweet, but since there is a 5 band EQ here, can easily tone down the highs if they are too hot for these MB drivers.

Should get them in time for the weekend so... we'll see?

make sure you match the impedences on the speakers.. I don't know what stock comp mb's are in those cars...

swez on 02/24/2004 11:17:31
Yep yep... these are 4 ohm drivers OEM and the new drivers are 4 ohm as well. Are you pulling my chain there ttocs? If anyone should know this impedence game by now... we are part of that crowd ya THINK ???

The tweeter is cheap... piezo is my guess by the construction of same and probably high effciency too. But the stock location has them so far off axis, probably lose 2-4 dB as opposed to on/near axis mounting. These also tend to sizzle and sound a bit brittle, rather than warm like soft or silk dome tweeters. I have to use EQ to bring them back to a decent listening SQ.

Well well... just got the new 5/4" MB drivers from PE today. Not bad looking and nice features for the cheap price. Poly cone, Butyl surroung, HD spider, 1" VC, 70 watts RMS, 50 -5,000 Hz, 4 ohms and almost an exact fit to the OEM... Sale: $7.60/ea. Can you believe that?

Those guys at PE are tops in my book. (3 day delivery) They gave me an install kit, terminal connectors and screws for mounting too. I'm impressed so far... now to install them and hear what they can do. Probably Saturday as we are getting rain today and Friday here.

We'll see!

what site is PE? I don't know that one by the abbreviation

Parts Express... they sell all kinds of audio gear both high end and OEM replacement stuff. Hardware of all kinds, components for unit repairs, crossovers, filters, cabinate parts, woofer, tweeters and everything in between. Pro gear too.

You are talking about the silver cone mids, right? How stiff are the cone edges (how much flex if pressed from behind)? Are the spiders flat? How much actual throw do the cones have? How stiff are the surrounds? Know it sounds funny but, I'm very picky about those things and I've been wanting to try them for a while. Just have been too skeptical. I've ran them through some programs and they will take too large of a enclosure for some of my ideas but, if they have good mid-bass I might trade them out for the Peerless I'm now running free air.

Gee, lots of Q's there bud...

1.Yep, silver Poly cone and d-cap
2. Flex.. not much now as they are new and in a box
3. Yes, flat, but sturdy spider
4. X-max... 2.0 mm
5. Butyl surrounds, so I expect the to have good compliance after break in time
6. Vas: 0.15 cf; Qms: 3.79; Qts: 0.88

Pretty heafty speaker as compared to OEM I took out. These are rated at 70 RMS too. Will advise what I hear after install.

Ok, they are in and there is a difference too... these are not as efficient as OEM's but SPL and SQ is not bad when using a 5 band EQ.

Definitely needs more power to make them woof... but midrange clarity is much better and a little less midbass for now. An amp will fix that too.

It seems this MB woofer would like a larger airspace too. This car has a small pocket enclosure installed into the door. More like a mini cabinate. I may pull them later and open up that chamber a tad or use some polyfill to increase the internal airspace.

In all, install went smoothly. The only real issue I encountered was the install holes were slighly off from OEM mounts. I did manage to accomodate that and may make a few mounting rings when get back to MI. That ring will definitely add more Depth to the chamber air space too. All said and done, not a bad sound for a very inexpensive speaker!

PS I hate GM door designs... all those wire harnesses to accessories mounted in the door make, for spagetti and 1 meatball (ME). Power seats, windows, locks, dual zone heat/cold control, door lamps and clamps... what were these engineers thinking about? Building a loony lander?

1. So in your honest opinion what are the pros and cons of these and how much would you recommend them to a person wanting to build their own component set?

2. How much actual power did you run to them?

3. Is the upper end response good enough to be easily matched with a set of tweets or will they present a problem?

swez on 02/29/2004 08:03:57
1. Amped, I think they will be OK after a moderate break in period. A EQ is highly suggested unless a perfectly matched tweeter & xover is used.

2. Stk HU.... 12-15 watts?

3. Good blend with present tweets. The upper midrange is much better than stock, but SPL is lower (-3dB or so) in MB region. So when amped, the tweets will probably be replaced or padded down -3dB.

I may try reversing polarity on 1 side to see if lower midbass improves as they are firing right at each other in stock locations. I also noted the impedence curve for these is +10 ohms at low freq of 60-100 Hz or so. That would account for the -3dB SPL in MB range. It flattens out well above that and this is why the midrange sounds pretty good.

At this point, I would not tell ppl to jump in and buy them unless they are amped and match the tweeter. I also think the airspace needed behind the driver needs to be larger to take full advantage of their design characteristics. I have noted the OEM speakers though cheap and whimpy, do produce good SPL at low watts. But the MB was fair, and upper mids were almost non-exsistant.

That's my genuine appraisal thusfar.

Thanks! It doesn't get much better than that. It sure is good to have people that give in-depth details. That kind of advise helps keep me motivated in teaching my peers how to get the best out of their money.
