Subaru Stereo Speaker HELP

Hey there all you car stereo folks! I desperately need help lest I go mad MAD-
I installed a clarion db125 CD player in my '99 subaru outback 'round 'bout a year ago...it worked smashingly for eight months. Coming out of a parking lot, I hit a divot in the road...the music stopped, faded back in quietly, then went out all together. The stereo itself still works- the power comes on, you can change stations etc. etc...you just can't hear anything. I re-checked all the wiring and everything was A-OK, just sans sound.
Recently, the durned thing has started playing again- or more specifically, the right front door speaker will come on for a few minutes, then fizzle out again. Talk about aggravating! THINK
My question is, what on earth is going on and how do I fix it??? I can't stand the idea of paying someone to look at my beloved Subie's stereo when I know I can fix it myself IF I could figure out what the heck is going on!!!!
Any advice troops? FROWN

if it went out because of a jaring from a bump then i would assume its soemthing that got shaken loose. it almost sounds to me like it was something inside the stereo itself.

what i would check

1 check all speaker wires to make sure they are connected at both ends.

2 check the decks wires IE power and all that (since the deck works just no sound i cant see it being a power wire though)

also if you have the stock deck still or any other deck i would suggest switching them out and seeing if the other deck works if so then its something internal with your deck. if it still doesnt work then its something with your wiring.

i always like to keep my OEM deck around for cars its a pricless tool for checking to see if its the wiring in the car or the deck.

just from the sounds of it i would say it had to be either a speaker wire shorting out somewhere or the deck rattled soemthing loose inside. i would probaly lean towards a shorting wire somewhere
easiestway i can see to check for a shorting wire would be to disconnect each speaker from the deck then hook them up one at a time if its just one speaker shorting then all the others should work unless the one thats shorting is hooked up.

did you replace the speakers as well? If so you need to check to make sure there are no connections shorting out behind them.

take the deck out and try to wiggle the wire hrns and see if anything happens. If not, time for a technical tap! Try shaking, and lightly bumping the deck to see if anything happens. Also look to see if there is a reset button, if so push it...

Sounds like you may have a loose speaker wire harness, poor ground or even loose antenna feed. Also, check your speaker lead harness at HU to be sure it is tight.

It seems like the majority of your HU functions are there, but signal output to speakers may be suspect. If you can get to a speaker and check AC voltage at the speaker terminals, this will tell you if the HU amps are still working and if the speakers are getting audio voltage from the HU.

If you cannot get AC voltage at speakers, either the HU amps have a problem or your speaker wiring is shorting, open or have defective speakers. A quick test for this:

1. pull the speaker wires harness off the HU
2. probe each speaker line pair with an Ohmeter
3. as you probe each wire pair, you should get a low resistance reading on the meter (3-10 ohms DC)
4. should also hear a slight popping noise as you probe each speaker lead pair too

If you get all 4 steps to pan out right, the speakers, harness and wiring from HU top speakers are OK. The HU amp would be the nect thing to look at.

PS If these are stock speakers and you have more than 15 watts (RMS) from each HU channel, the speakers may be shot. Last time I looked at a Forrester... the speakers used in the stock package were absolute trash. The stock HU was fair... but overall, the sound was remarkably lame as OEM componets go. Great vehicles... lousy sound systems.
