02 Navigator

I've got a 02 Navigator and was thinking of upgrading the system. I want to keep the stock head unit and tie the aftermarket equipment into it. If I use a 4-channel amp with speaker level inputs for my front and rear speakers will I still be able to use the dual source on my receiver and turn off the rear speakers? Also I'm not sure what kinda amp-sub combo for my bass. I don't have a lot of room in the back 13.5"D1x10.5"D2x53"W. I've got plenty of room for height. I'd like something that really hammers but don't require a lot of air space and that don't break the bank. I'm sure with my multimedia and aftermarket system that I'll probably need to upgrade my alternator. Where's a good place to look? Any inputs appreciated.

This is probably a Premium Ford system with internal amps to drive your present speakers. This makes things a bit more challenging as you have to bypass the amps and get your signal feeds at the right voltage range to the 4 channel amp. You may have to replace the stock speakers as well as they may have odd ohmage ratings and may not sound very good out of a non-factory amp. "Ttocs" is pretty familiar with this system and may have some very helpful suggestions.

As for sub(s)... you can usually buy a special device that takes rear speaker signal voltages, knocks them down to usable RCA voltage limits (1-6 volts) and then input these to your sub amp.

As for sub(s) you have decent space for a pair of 10's, 12's or a single 15" sub. Depends on the kind of bass you want and the bass SPL you desire. Most car subs can take pretty compact sub enclosures and net very good bass. If you have a brand preference, power rating of the amp and any sub brands you like, let us know your budget figures and we can give you some suitable options. You may not need a huge sub amp to get adequate bass SPL here. That huge cabin gives lots of extra bass gain (cabin gain effect) to subs and therefore, a smaller bass system may be all you really need.

PS Are you willing/able to build a custom box for the woofer or buy off the shelf?

PSS These vehicles can resonate and rattle like crazy with high SPL bass systems. To tone that down requires hours of pulling panels to install sound deadning materials. Not cheap to do and many hours of work are involved. So... think carefully before you dive into a large bass engine system.
