1990 nissan sentra, In the morning when I first start the car and turn the stereo on if I press one of the buttons for a FM preset or change from fm to cd I get a popping noise thru my pass. side door speaker, if I move the balance control to the drivers side I still get the popping noise thru the pass. side speaker, this only happens when the car is first started, after a few minutes it goes away, stereo consists of a sony pre-amp only head unit going to a kicker KX-3 crossover, than to a alpine amp for the front speakers and a PPI amp for the subs. No popping thru the rear just the passenger side speaker. any ideas?? Thanks

That's an odd one... The first place to start would be to look at your grounding scheme. The HU should be grounded to the floor pan or other metal that is truly grounded to the body. The factory HU ground may not be adequate for this. Look for corrosion at your present grounding sites. (bare metal is your goal for a good ground)

Then do the same with your Alpine amp and Kicker xover. If the ground is not a perfect return to the body, odd things happen.

Finally, if that does not solve the problem... try plugging a Walkman into the Kicker crossover inputs. It there is no noise here, your HU may have a problem... loose or corrosion on the flip face connector tabs may be the root of this pop.

The head unit is grounded to the support under and to the side of the radio ( where the pocket under the radio covers), there is no ground in the factory harness, I now have the head unit hooked directly to the fuse panel because I was having a problem with the harness and figured it was better to bypass the factory harnes all together instead of trying to locate a short somewhere in it. My 2 amps and crossover are grounded to thje metal behind the rear seat back, i plan on in the very near future to re do the grounds in the trunk using a distribution block with some 4 gauge going directly to a factory bolt I just have to figure out which bolt and where I'm going to attach it too, I will of course wire wheel the paint off so I get a good ground. In my former truck ( a nissan ) I drilled a hole in the floor and bolted a SS bolt thru with a pc of 4 gauge running under the truck from the bolt to the frame, than I ran all my grounds to the bolt inside the cab, maybe I'll do something like that. The weird part is I only get the popping noise when I first turn the stereo on in the AM, Who knows?? Oh, the alpine amp was cutting out ( my other post) I replaced the RCA block and it was still doing it so someone lent me 2 amps, a crunch 100x2 and a yamaha I used the crunch amp in place of the alpine to see if it still cut out but it didn't so now I know it was the alpine amp, the guy told me I could have the amps said he didn't need them so I put the crunch amp back in, not sure if the popping noise is still there with the crunch amp will check tomorrow, sorry so long thanks for your suggestions

You bet... BTW, when making long posts as you do (good detail is important) try breaking up each new subject with a new paragraph. Much easier to read and respond to points A, B, C of your post.

Also, if your post gets buried on other pages of the board, just go and write "Bump" on the reply and hit send. This will bring that post back to the front page where most of us focus upon. That way you are sure of getting a complete response from any who may see it.

I had to dig back a few pages to find your posts... but normally don't have the time to do so.

Thanks,

Swez
