Hi to all, HAPPY I just installed a DPX-400 double din unit into my 1994 Toyota Landcruiser. After installing the unit, replacing the factory single tape unit i was faced with a problem. When i put the headlight switch to the park light position, the tail lamp fuse blows. I could not understand this, as i would think that the stereo, and tail lamp power supplies have nothing to do with eachother. I pulled the dash apart again, and disconnected the new stereo. I replaced the tail lamp fuse and tried the park lights again. This time the fuse did not blow. I reconnected the stereo, and tried the switch, and it blew again. I looked through the Toyota owners manual at the wiring diagrams, and the power supply from the fuse box (says cig.) goes to the stereo. The tail lamps fuse is below the cig fuse. Considering that these two fuses have nothing to do with eachother, i am puzzled as to why one is blowing. Do i need to make two new power wires (constant, and ignition.) for the larger stereo? This is my only idea, maybe the new DPX-400 needs alot more power than the old factory unit. Any help would be greatly appreciatted. Thankyou Aaron Replies (10) cplkittle on 02/15/2004 09:29:57 If you have an empty slot in your fusebox that works off the ignition switch, I would use that. Use the same size fuse or one step larger than the inline fuse or the fuse on the back of the stereo. ttocs on 02/15/2004 10:47:10 sounds like you have wired into the dimmer/illumination wire. If that is a pioneer that you installed the older units used orange as tehe +12v wire, where orange is normally for the ill wire. If that is not the case I would try testing for voltage on all the wires in the dash with the lights on, and with the lights off. You might just be grounding the ill wire behind the radio. It is normall for the cig lighter and radio constant to be on the same circuit. azaufc on 02/15/2004 19:57:33 Hi, thankyou for your replies. I have used the yellow wire from the kenwood unit to wire to the ignition wire. The orange wire on my head unit has a tag saying "illumi". Is this the wire that i should be wiring to the ignition wire instead? Thanks again Aaron azaufc on 02/15/2004 20:48:51 Sorry, i told you wrong. I have wired the "yellow" wire form the Kenwood unit, to the constant 12v wire in the car. I have then wired the "red" wire from the head unit, to the wire in my car, that only works with ignition on. There is a wire form the head unit spare. This is an orange wire, and it says "illumi". The ignition wire that i have wired to, is part of the cig, although this doesn't explain to me why the tail lamp fuse blows, and now the brake lamp fuse has blown too. Have i understood you correctly when you say that i should use the "orange" wire form the head unit, instead of the yellow one? Oh, and thanks for your help "cplkittle", but there is no spare place in the fuse box that runs off the ignition. Aaron ttocs on 02/15/2004 21:13:27 your +12 wires sound fine. How were you testing for voltage? if the wires are working correctly(meaning you have phisically tested them for voltage), then we need to look at the ground. Disconnect it from the deck and test that wire, after replacing the fuses. Test it with the lights off, then on. You need to do this to all the pwr wires, one of them is the Factory illumination wire. That wire is supposed to go to the orange kenwood wire. If none of the pwr wires showes voltage with the lights on, then you need to test the speaker wires, untill all the wires are tested. Quick thought, did you have any extra factory wires that you did not use? If so, how did you insulate the ends of those wires? ttocs on 02/15/2004 21:14:12 noticed you have AZ in your signon, are you near phoenix? azaufc on 02/15/2004 23:33:01 Thankyou for your assistance "ttocs". You were right, well done! I had the ground wire from the HU connected to the illumination wire from the car. Glad we got that one sorted out. Although now the brake lamp fuse blows every time! I remove the power sources from the wiring harness of the HU, replace the brake lamp fuse then press brake, and it blows again. Not sure if this is a direct result of the HU installation, or if it has been caused by a short circuit somewhere down the line, because of the incorrectly joined wires. Has anybody had trouble when fitting a new HU to a Land cruiser, and knows exactly how the whole setup works? There is a factory Amplifier up the back which runs a factory Sub. This setup is located near the brake lights, is it possible this could be the problem somehow? By the way "ttocs", unfortunately i am not in or near Phoenix. Thanks Aaron ttocs on 02/16/2004 10:48:47 it should not be too hard to trouble shoot a brake fuse problem... There is a switch mounted on the brake. Start there and make sure it is not grounding out, nor are the wires comming from the switch. New vehicles use multiplex systems meaning that they tie parts into one another. For instance gm likes to run the door chime into the radio, pull the radio, loose the chime unless you do some extra work. It is possible that the brakes could go through the radio, but I have not heard of such a thing. azaufc on 02/18/2004 04:47:20 Well, all is absolutely fantastic with my new Kenwood system! Thankyou very kindly for your help "ttocs'! You are a legend! The brake lamp fuse was just a coincidence that it happened at the same time as the tail ligts fuse. The previous owner of this car had a remote trailer braking system fitted, then removed it when i bought the car. The live wire was just cut off, and not insulated properly therefore causing the short. I fixed it up, and all is back to normal. Thankyou thankyou thankyou "ttocs"!
