Help: My speakers short out

I have a 1995 honda civic with an older kenwood deck (1995 or so), a 600 watt kenwood amp, and two 10 inch Kicker Comp subwoofers. My problem is that every time that I make a left turn, my speakers short out, however, my subwoofers don't. So I will still be hearing all the bass lines without actual music from the speakers. But whenever I turn right, they go back to working ok. I called a local car audio place and they said that "they'd look at it" for $60 an hour. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some easy fix or something that I could do myself before I went off spending $60 an hour to have it "looked at." I am far from being an expert.. obviously.. but i am knowledgable on car stereos and hope i can fix this myself... if i knew what to do.

hello soccer guy, i have dealt with this a few times with folks and it happened to me once about five years ago. i saying this thinking your amp is connected to the subs only since you did not specify. many times a loose speaker installed in a vehicle panel can shift and ground itself out to the chassis of the car. we know that if a speaker does ground itself to the vehicle if it receives its power from the HU, it will short out the other speakers too especially if the speaker is an aftermarket speaker that doesn't quite fit the opening.
so, start by checking to make sure the speakers are secured properly in the doors and such and the +/- terminals are not touching the metal.

i just recently had a gentleman with this very same problem last week talk to me, and i found his rear left speaker was shifting slightly in it's opening everytime he turned just like you and shorting the sound.....these are places you want to look first. if you think you have found where it is happening, leave the stereo running and move the speaker a little with your hand like it would move if you turned your vehicle, and if the sound goes out, you know that speaker is the problem.

stop turning left... Three rights equals a left...

I would certainly take a look at the basics before I went to a shop. That is the usual hourly rate, but there are alot of shops that will do it for less if they can get you as a customer.

First, can you take the deck out and check the connections? Can you get to the speakers?

Your one of those wussy soccer guys huh? Just kidding, I played midfield/forward through high school. U?

Thanks to both of you who responded. Fitz1465 hit it right on the nose though. I had just recently intalled aftermarket speakers and the terminals were making contact with the body.... I ended up just insulating that with electrical tape and it works great now.. Thank you SOOO much.... ttocs, i like your logic, as for wussy soccer guy, i'm a senior in high school, team captain, and won all league honors. i play attacking midfield (like a third forward in a 4-4-2 formation). Anyways, i won't bore you all, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to both of you and let everyone know how much this website ROCKS. thanks.
