ok, its time to get a new home surround, i was wondering which of the following brands of recievers will be a good purchase. denon, onkyo, or sony. im lookin to spend 550 or less on a reciever and probably about the same of a set of good speakers, i lalready have an mtx sw1212 subwoffer. i see crutchfield had a set of inifnitys for 449 down from like 899 do they look like a good buy? which type of speakers will i get best sound from, satalite-floor standing-bookshelf. or would it be better to mix and match. maybe have floorstanding for front left and right and maybe satalite for rear, and a good center channel. i hear good things about polk audio but im not lookin to spend that much money. any other comments would be great. im not looking for huge bass from the speakers since i have a high output sub, i just want something crisp and clear, and at a reasonable price. thanx alot Replies (7) uochronos on 02/11/2004 13:34:21 if its for music i would go with floor standing personaly. if its for just movies satelites with a sub are a nice way to go to keep things looking nice and neat. if its for a mixture of both i would suggest floor standing in front and statalites for rear. alot of people are down on sony but i have a sony reciver for my home stereo and it works good and is very simple to use. its not the best quality i haev ever heard but it sounds good. and for 400$ you can get a quite decent sony...ui dont know anything about denon but i know onkyo is probaly one fo the better brands my friend has a 1000$ onkyo and it sounds very nice. its sort of complicated to use though. and for 550$ you well only be getting a lower end model onkyo unless you buy used. hope this is of some help compvr15s on 02/11/2004 13:57:03 yea thanx for the input, i know many people that dis sony too, i really cant say nothing bad about them becuase i dont have sony, but the ones i have heard, they seem decent, i think thier home audio is better than thier car audio uochronos on 02/11/2004 16:24:09 defiantly i wont buy there car stuff bad experiences. but there home stuff seems reasonable i got mine for 200$ on sale normaly 350$ and it runs my speakers great and has more then enough inputs and out puts for everything. and for the price it does the job well. i would say there home stereo recivers are probaly right in the middle of quality and price. i have heard alot of good things about kenwoods too recently. i would suggest picking up a home stereo magazine at the local store i read one the other day that i barrowed from a friend and it was very informative with reviews and what not. i well see if i can find the name of the magazine. cplkittle on 02/11/2004 18:41:22 If you are referring to the infinity entra point five system, that is a deal. My father in law has that exact system, and it is CLEAN!! Puts my RCA 6 piece system to shame! I think he gave almost $1,000 for his setup, but I don't remember what brand reciever he bought.. seems like pioneer, I may be wrong though. fitz1465 on 02/12/2004 20:04:50 it's very difficult to beat an Onkyo receiver unless you're planning to step into maybe a high end B&K or Anthem unit, but these are around $3500 and they just offer a little more home versatility, but not really outdoing the ONKYO on SQ. i think ONKYO's sound much better than evem a Denon or H/K or Yamaha reciever (these i think are comparable in quality) set 3 or 4 similar spec. recievers in a test room and most people will pick the sound of the ONKYO. i suggest one with 7 channels as this is the closest up to date reciever and 7 surrounds does sound substantial if set up correctly. the 800 series ONKYO is the lowest priced 7 channel receiver at 100w per channel, and it kicks a**. if can't afford a 7 channel drop down. even the 5 channels have amazing sound reproduction and are reasonably priced. do not be fooled by their power ratings either, they are much more accurate in telling what they really put out compared to the lower end brands. just go listen to them compared to the others, and then find it on ebay our someplace. circuit city carries ONKYO and many other good brands to compare to. a 5 or 6 channel one of the cheapest should be between $200-$300. ttocs on 02/12/2004 23:24:08 I have an onkyo dtx-6 myself.. Been loving it for 4 yrs now. I got mine in my last days working for a dealer in the midwest. I am not big on the remote, but the sound is awsome.... There is a good markup on them. If you check out ebay I bet you can get one for a good price. compvr15s on 02/17/2004 13:16:43 just a follow up. i went with the dennon avr884 receiver. for fronts i went with infinity floor standing dual 6 1/2" primus speakers. for center channel i got the infintiy primus dual 5 1/4" just becuase they didnt have the dual 6 1/2" at the time of the sale. for rears i went with the infinity primus 6 1/2" book shelfs. and another add on, i got rid of my jvc big screen and went with a mitsubishi big screen. american was having a half off of thier mark up sale so i ended up saving over 500 dollars on this stuff. plus now i went from thier worst quality tv to one of thier best. and they threw in a high quality toshiba dvd player as well as a monster cable for my sub woofer. alot happier with what i have now, and got it all for a reasonalbe price.
