i was curious if anyone knew a good amp w/ sub system that would sound really good with rock or metal music. i listen to bands like linkin park, staind and incubus who all have pretty decent bass in their music. i am lookin for a good amp/sub system to take some stress off my speakers when i turn it up. thanks Replies (4) shwanZman on 05/3/2003 20:25:04 -1995 ford mustang 3.8 -50x4 pioneer head unit -6 6x9 pioneer speakers ryan on 05/4/2003 01:20:17 Dont take my word on this (guys tell me if im wrong) for rock wouldnt u want a sub with higher hz. Maybe alpine which goes to 1000hz or Pioneer or Sony subs which can reach close to 3000hz but i dont believe pioneer and sony are that good of subs and when u get up in that high of hz isnt that not to good for ur subs. Again dont take my word for this unless i get sum back up from the other guys since im not positive on this. xplicitblitzboi on 05/4/2003 02:07:54 Well, I wouldnt recommend sony for anything, and i would only recommend pioneer for Head Units. Usually if you want to get into the higher frequencies, you let your tweeters and midbass fill in that area, subs are used for the lower frequencies. There arent really any specific type of subs made for metal or hard rock music, bass is bass. To give you an accurate recommendation, i would need to know your price range. but if you are going to be putting strain on your interior speakers by turning it up loud, you may want to get an amp dedicated to just them. when you say 6 6x9s, thats all the way around? front and back? with this you may want to get some round speakers for the front, so you have the sound stage drawn to the front of the vehicle, thus making the vehicle sound better overall. but now on to your original question. There are a lot of good subs and amps out there. I know that you arent looking for a competition system so here are a few suggestions based on that. Subs: Kicker Comp VR JL Audio w0 JL Audio w3 or w3v2 Cerwin Vega Stroker or Vega series Amps: JBL 300.1(want a good amount of bass, good for budget if you want to get loud too $140) JL 300/1(if you go with a more expensive sub ie:w3v2 $140) JBL 150.1(if you just want a little extra bass without putting too much strain on your wallet or your electrical system.$80) Kicker KX400.1(another good alternative, from $250) all prices taken from www.etronics.com, the prices will be more if you want to buy from an audio store. Etronics does not sell JL audio products, but the amp is most likely around 300-400 dollars. let me know if you are looking for a lot of bass, my suggestions will give you a decent system that is well rounded, all though i would recommend upgrading your front speakers to some 6" or so. Let me know if you have any questions. Swez on 05/5/2003 08:02:32 Good info there Xplic... and to piggy back on that a bit, that HU is rated at 50 watts x 4 peak . What you are really getting is closer to ~22 watts RMS per channel. What you really want to know, is the RMS power of an amp or speakers as this is a real world audio measuring rod. Peak or Peak to Peak values are great for bragging rights to those who do not have a background in audio... but RMS power is the nomenclature to compare. If you are happy with the SPL levels your HU and interior speakers give now, can stay with a modest sub amp and a single good sub if you want to match and balance the system. That's about 150-200 watts RMS amping power and a good quality 10 or 12" sub. However, if you are looking for some serious bass upgrades and clean SPL, the price of poker goes up fast. Can you give us a budget number you have to work with? With that, we can dial you in on some products that will meet your needs and budget. You can do well in a modest bass system for about $300.00. If you desire a real boomer system, have a few more questions to sort out before making any rational recommendations. Swez FYI: RYAN, most subs operate best in the 60 - 120 Hz range. The interior speakers handle the rest, above that range. A decent set of 6x9's (not stocks) can do 60/80 Hz and up pretty well. But if you dont have tweeters, will lose most of the high end frequencies above 3,000 Hz or so. That's a big loss in cymbals, high hat, synth and guitar harmonics. Plus, we loose the speech intelligabilty of the vocals w/o tweets. Results... poor full range response and very much out of balance.
