HU problem. Please HELP!

Hi guys,

I have a 1996 Kenwood KDC-7003 cd receiver, and it has worked fine since I bought it new. The problem I am having now is that the power shuts off within 30 seconds or so after powering up. If I'm using a CD, the CD ejects. Also, if I turn it up above a low volume, I hear some crackling from the speakers. I'm very sure the problem is with the HU and not the install, b/c it's been working fine for years. I checked all the connections to make sure and everything was fine. The problem is more pronounced when I'm driving, but it happens even when the engine is off too. Any suggestions? Am I dealing with dirty contacts and/or losse solder joints inside the unit?

Thank You,

Tyler

The first thing to check here, is that you have a solid ground and power connections to this HU. The ground can look good but be flakey, if not grounded to the chassis or floor pan... bare metal connection, not a harness ground.

If that does not cure the problem, might have to yank it out and perform a bench check. If bench check gives same results, you have 3 choices:

1. Pull the HU apart and have a real close look at the PCB for bad solder joints or loose internal connections (good luck as these things require "Chinese hands" to work inside them

2. Take the HU in for a look by a qualified tech. Maybe he has seen this one before and can do a cheap repair

3. Consider yourself fortunate... replace the HU as you got 6-7 good years out of it

your best bet would be to just get a new HU, kenwood is not known for their reliability, so i think you're lucky that you got 6 or so years out of that HU. Look into the JVC Digifine KD SH-77, i believe it has 4 volt preouts, at a reasonable price. but other than that, look into eclipse, alpine, clarion, or pioneer, just depending on your price range. other than replacing the HU, i dunno what u can do, unless you wanna spend some money or take apart the unit and risk damaging it further :)

good luck

I disagree on the reliability of kenwood. I have a 7003 from around that time as well that is currently in my brothers car. Had a bunch of friends that had/have old kenwoods.

hmmmm, thats interesting, i've had 2 kenwoods and they both broke within 6 months. i've had a bunch of friends that had kenwood amps and HUs and they all broke within a year or so. so thats interesting. I have a kenwood home receiver, and it seems to work fine, but i just dont trust them from experience. i guess ppl just have different luck.

I've looked at a Kenwood receiver with your sympoms before. Couldn't be fixed. Start making out that tombstone, cuz soon it will be six feet under.

Megahurtz cuts to the chase fast... I tend to lean his way and yes, Kenwood does make some good electronics in gerneral... but there are a few "dogs" out there too... That's what happends whena company cuts costs or try a new technology.

Is a good bet in Kenwood eXcelon, Pioneer, Eclipse, JVC and most other Japanese brands... the only one I have a gripe with is Sony... they promise the moon, charge a fortune and deliver less others in the same price class.

So sue me Sony... I have one of your TV's... that' how I know..

you didn't buy the vega did you? They were nice when they first came out, until I saw one. The place I used to work for sold sony and toshiba cinima sound tv's. You could not sell a sony that was next to the toshibe, even in the toshiba happened to cost a little more, not that it happened very much. I like their vcr's....

As for the kenwoods, maybe the 7003 was just a good deck?

I agree with the Toshiba TV idea... I got one great deal on this Sony when Montgomery Ward closed. Was about 50% off retail with a coupon and all discounts... so I took the plunge. So far, no regrets!

The Sony has worked flawless in 4 years, but my main TV is a Toshiba 36". When I get rich again, will go large screen and yes, Toshiba is my best choice here too.

So what huh?

PS No, I don't think this is Vega series TV... but even if it were, it works fine regardless.

well, I have heard and seen a couple of vegas, but that was a while ago, i've always recommended them. They were great. CV makes some great stuff, especially the paper cone stuff. I guess im a little bit old fasioned, but if over 50 percent of the speakers in the world are made with it, it cant be too bad :) so i guess maybe not the vega series, but i've recently listened to and seen the CV strokers, and theyre still as good as ever. If you disagree with me on that, i dunno wut ur lookin at :)

I never liked CV really and I even used to sell them..
