Kenwood PS300T Protection Mode

Hi, I know there was a very similar post to this a while ago http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?g1132_803

I have the same problem. I have 2 12' RF Subs with a Kenwood KAC-PS300t amp.

I have had the same setup for about 2 years now. Recently, I started noticing that the amp would shut off after a few minutes of driving/listening. I figured it may be overheating(florida) But it would happen when I wasn't pumping the music very loud as well.

Just last night, the amp shut off, and it has not come back on.

I disconnected all the cables except for the Power, Ground, and remote wire from the HU. I still get a Green light, then a Red light after about 3 seconds. When the red light turns on, you can hear a loud click from the amp.

I don't believe it to be a short, or overheating. The amp was off all night, and it was about 55 degrees this morning. I ruled out the short, since I disconected everything but power and ground.

Does anyone know what else I might try. Fuses look good too. I really don't have the money now for a new amp, and hate to send it for repairs. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am getting the feeling that the amp is broken... But if you really want to be sure test your amp out in a friend’s car. You've done a good job so far to test the amp I don't have any other ideas of what to check.

Maybe we can throw down some numbers to see what the specifications are on your sub woofers and amplifier. So we can get some new amplifier possibilities down on the table.

I couldn't find any information on the amplifier maybe you can?

What model Rockford Fosgate subs do you have?

If we end up getting you a new amp I'll make sure we pick out a really good one to match your subs well so we don't have these problems.

I fear the amp might have been pushed to hard and caused something to break but after we see the numbers I'll be able to get a better idea.

I have 12' Rockford HE2 Subs(2 of them)
The specs are as follows:
Impedence: 4ohms X 2
Power Handling: 400/800

I think that should be enough info, Let me know if you need anything else.

I had the Kenwood amp Bridged out for 4ohms with the gain at about 2 and the frequency filters set where they sounded best to me.

thanks again for any help

I was reading the troubleshooting section of my kenwood owners manual for my 600w amp. Under "protection mode activated when:" The last entry is when a ground wire of the HU is not grounded properly. Check your stereo ground, it may be trying to ground through the amplifier or vice versa, your amp may not properly be grounded and may be trying to ground through the HU.

Just out of curiosity, I pulled the amp from the car and was messing around with my multi-meter.

Using the Ohm setting at x10, I am getting a very strong reading when I connect one probe to either the Ground or the Power(12v) of the amp to both (-) negative speaker terminals.

I also found that if I shake the amp around a bit, I only get a reading from ground to Negative, I shake again, I get strong reading Power to Ground to Negative.

I am assuming this is a bad bad thing. I don't think it is good for my Power(12v) to be connecting to my Ground terminal.

Please note, that this is with the amp sitting on my kitchen floor with no wires attached.

Am I lucky my car isn't on fire??? Anyway, I am trying as I type to see what the cause of this connection is, If I can remedy it, I think my problem is solved. I will keep updating when I find out more.

Thanks
Patrick
