almost cut my thumb off....

I was cutting a wire tie(zip tie) today and learned an important lesson, again... USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB!!!! All my normal tools are at the shop I work part time for, so I tried some scissors, they were way dull.. I couldn't find any cutters, so I had a small serated(sp?) knife from the kitchen. The wire tie cut alos easier then I expected, and the knife went straight into my thumb... I didn't see it, but blood started comming pretty quick. I grabbed a towel near the sink and felt that I had cut it perty well.. I startet to get a bit light headed, as I tried to figure out what to do. I went to the neighbors, but they were not home. I called my roomate at work and had him look up the nearest urgent care. In the mean time I calmed myself down, found a clean towel and a compression bandage and took care of it as best I could. The nearest place was 5 min up the road, and I was amazed to be in and out in an hour. The doctor complimented me on doing a good job(on the cut!), I would have given the thumbs up, but it kinda blended in with the rest of my hand with all the bandages...

Now this is where it sucks... Today was my last day of work for the week. I am taking the next two weeks off. I have a buddy from back home flying in tommorow to check out phoenix as he is considering moving here and has a couple of interviews arranged. We of course are also plannin a roadtrip(arriba mexico!) as well as just having a one heck of a good time. I was also entered in my second mountain bike race for this saterday, guess that is off.. next friday I am hopping a plane and heading to breckenridge for a week of skiing with an old college buddy who at onetime EARNED the nickname of "spew"... Hopefully it will not get in the way of that. I am sure some of you remember my last vacation, where I ended up on a 10 day, 2 country 4 hospital tour while vomitting the entire time.. I gotta quit taking vacations, they are really tearing me up....

I am also cussing that I should have just gone to work today. I was looking forward to this vacation so bad that I decided to start a little early and took the day off today.....

Wow, that sucks. Yea, tools will definitely help if they are designed for the job. I almost "pinched" my ring finger off in my door once, cut went to the bone. I also almost cut my middle finger on the other hand off once cutting a whole in a beer can to shotgun it. Problem was the knife I used was a butter knife so I had to push so hard it went straight through and went to the bone.

Sounds like fun, and since we are sharing stories, I might as well chip in my compound miter saw safety tips... DO NOT TRY TO CUT SMALL PIECES OF TRIM ON A COMPOUND MITER SAW THINKING YOU CAN HOLD IT STILL!! The blade grabbed the piece of shoemold and flung it leaving my left index finger numb. The reason it was numb is because it was laying on table the saw was on. I lost it just behind the first knuckle. They were able to reattach it, but I lost about 1/4" in length and the flexiility of that last knuckle.

Cool story, but it is a pain trying to re-learn to use a finger that dosen't bend.

yeah, i tried to hold a very small piece of pretty aluminum last year that i was fabricating for a sub box emblem in a belt sander to shape it a little........yeah, we humans just don't have that strong of fingers for that sort of thing......it tends to rip the aluminum right out of your hand and make your hand look like it took a dive off of a motorcycle onto the black searing summer pavement at about fifty mph....nice detail huh..

That is one sad story...this just happen? thats one sick way to start of a year. Sorry to hear about the finger kittle...

I would say to always take your time too. I was in a hurry to go to the hardware store to pick up more primer. i closed the garage door by the crease....and i had both my hands stuck in the crease of the garage door with the garage door all the way down... needless to say it took a while for someone in my house to hear my screaming (im pretty sure at least one of my neighbors got a good laugh or two) and i ended up not being able to do much anything for about a week and a half (think about it, use your hands and feel like someone is twisting them in a vise) . healed almost perfectly. my right pinky is a little bigger than my left. thats the only nail that came off haha.

Speaking of wierd accidents... was out in my garage a few summers ago and a storm started whipping up. We had a little shade tent on the side of the garage and it was really starting to flag in the strong gusts.

As I watched from the side entry door, a big gust came through and yanked the tent from its tie downs and went sailing past me like a huge umbrella. Out of pure reflex, I reached out and grabbed one of the tent legs... (why? I don't know... just seems like the thing to do) LOL

Well, as luck would have it, the force was so stong, it pulled my left shoulder out of the socket and I had to go to the hospital to have it reset. The pain was so intense, I thought I was going to pass out.

I sat in the ER for over 2 hours when a Doc sitting 5 feet away got off his chair at a computer, came over to see me and asked "Are you in much pain"? I could have punched him into next week!!!

Well, he did give me some morphine, gave it 20 minutes and then started yanking. Finally, he got it back into place and the pain went away almost immediately... relief... But, I still should have punched his lights out!!!

Finally, the bill came and I sent a nasty-gram back to the hospital stating that was the worst service I have ever received and would not pay the $900.00 fee. In fact, be lucky that I do not sue the hopital for negligence and the Doc for malpractice.

That's my dumb luck story...

PS Oh... that trick that Mel Gibson uses to reset his shoulder in the movies, is absolutely bogus. Tried it 3 times and nothing but more pain.

well since we are sharing grusome stories.
I was riding my mountain bike down some stairs a few years back. going way faster then i sanely should have been and bam hit a mail box that was soemwhere around the bottom. well i hit it with such a force it knocked the wind out of me. i got back up and felt no worse for wear until i noticed blood on my shoe. I started to search my leg then noticed the large(about 4 inch long gash) on my arm right about the elbow on the soft inside flesh of my arm. went all the way to the bone almost. seems i hit the box with such force it simply split it right open.
Its sort of wierd being able to see the inside of your arm:) only good thing was that at least it split open and was a clean cut not a tear, that and i got a damn nifty scar out of it.

i got wierd story too, a few years back when i was still in high school, were were doing bowling in P.E with these 7lb rubber bowling balls. we started playin dodgeball with them, someone threw one at me and i went to stop it with my hand kinda like a fist, well the ball was so heave it split the skin between my middle finger and my index finger about an inch and a half long, theres alot of blood and guts between your fingers, i didnt know muscles were a dark red like that, now when i spead my hand open i get a slight pain between them two fingers. pretty wierd, i had always wondered what it was like to cut yourself between the fingers, well now i know.

Well, we have some intreresting stories here... off topic a bit, but cool to share anyway.

About hand injuries... there are no muscles in the hand. Only ligaments and tendons. What you saw were the tendons that make the fingers do their magic... make the hand work. Kinda neat how all these things fit together and allow humans to do what we do with our hands and such huh? Who ever thought all these details up? He must have been a Master Craftsman of design and order.

I don't follow the logic of evolution as I have never seen a critter morph into a human. In 10,000 years, we can never get a watch to build itself by tossing a bunch of watch parts into a box and shake it up for years right.... if there is a design, there was a Designer that created that simple or complex critter. We can "clone"... but we have yet to create living things from inert matter.

Just something to think about, next time we have an injury and it heals all by itself... how'd they do that?
