I just bought a civic and i have the old system from my avenger and i want to install it in the civic. But I want to use the factory head unit. The amp is a sony x-plod 222 and the amp is a sony x-plod 12. I just need to know how to hook it up to the factory head unit

you will have to tap into the speaker wires coming from the head unit and I would suggest getting a Line-Out Converter to keep out the unwanted noise and then you can hook RCAs into that and go straight to the amp.

Where would I tap them at, and do I use both sides (l,R) I dont know much 'bout car electronics I'm a motor man

preferably you would get the signal behind the radio, then run rca cables back to the amp to help reject noise. if that is too much of a pain you can get the signal at the rear speakers. Your amp probably has "high level inputs" on it somewhere inwhich case you do not need the line out converter(loc).
If it is for just one sub you may be able to get by with only one side, but I would still recommend getting both the left and the right.

yes if your amp has high level inpouts you can go without the "loc" but it isn't recommended beacuse of "outside" noise interference.

I disagree... have been running my sub amp off the rear speakers for 3 years and never had any noise problems. Makes sense too as the factory HU voltage is higher then HU RCA's and the S/N is good enough to block any noise issues to date. Similar to a Iine driver as I see it. Is that common knowledge or beginner's luck?

PS Did same on a few other factory HU systems and same results... noise free installs each time??? (each were JBL amps too)

I would call it lucky if you have had no noise problems.

I would always recommend tapping the signal at the back of the deck if you are using a loc. If you are just going to use the high level inputs I would go in back then for ease of install.

The problem you get into is that you amplify the decks noise twice....
