I got a new car I am getting a new job soon and this calls for a new stereo. I will try to save up for a new system. I bought a 1990 Chevy Lumina 4 door sedan with a 2.5 ltr 3 speed automaic with 63,000 miles for 1000 bucks perfect shape. I wanted to get some numbers on the table. I will be ordering everything online. I have a pretty good idea what I am looking for I want a system that I don't need to keep upgrading!! Something that BUMPS like a SQL system. All I need is Sub(s) and an amp. I just can't decide what sub(s)?! There are soo many and of course all the really great ones cost way too much money. I would like a JBL 1200.1 or JBL 600.1 amplifer with about a 500 dollar limit. I have 1,000 watt wiring kit, speakers, deck ect.. I can get a box no problem for free or really cheap. Soo many brands for subs1!??? Which too pick. I have a TON of room in my trunk and I never use it soo big subs = no problem. I looked up on www.ikesound.com they have JBL 1200.1 for $250 and the JBL 600.1 for $189 So that leaves $250 - $311 dollars for subs Suggestions? Replies (21) Munchiesyumm on 01/2/2004 15:32:52 I was looking at the Pioneer Primer 15's for $109 ea. Is this a knock off? I know they make one of the best HU but I am not sure abot their subs. compvr15s on 01/2/2004 16:23:17 ive heard a set of 15s pioneer not sure of the model but i was not very impressed, they were loud dont get me wrong but they sounded bad, they were runnin of an mtx 500d so they were getting probably 375watts to each speaker, i myself have 15inch compvrs, they sound alot better than the pioneers, and can be had for probably 220 shipped for 2 15s, they dont have the greatest sound quality but they arnt bad, and since they are goin to be in your trunk most of the sound will be muffled. i have heard jl 15 inch w3s and w0s, i think the shop had w3, they were pretty impressive but i dont know what the internet price was, i know the shop wanted 750 for 2 15s and the jl slotted box. there are many to choose from, just make a few selections and then run them by us, we should be able to get you steppin in the right direction. good luck. uochronos on 01/2/2004 19:05:26 My personal preference for cheaper and great SQ and loudness is Alpine type R's you can get 2 of these 12" for 250$ with shipping or 2 of these 10" for 230$ with shipping off ebay... also i have heard some killer stuff about elemental designs speakers. you can get a single one of there 12" a series speakers for 300$ and from what i hear you well only need one to blow you away... hope this helps Munchiesyumm on 01/3/2004 21:29:43 Yea I think I will go with the alpines. Thanks uochronos, I was thinking though I am not into like bass that will make me deaf maybe one really high quality 15 for 200 bucks or so? Alpine type R 15's are pretty cool looking, I was thinking maybe one of those in a single sealed enclosure. I have heard a set of 2 of them they are monstars. That way too I can just go with the JBL 600.1 sense the sub is 500 watts rms. That should be good if I keep the gain down right? JBL 600.1 = 189.00 Alpine SWR-1541D = 179.10 4 + 4ohm total $368 Can anyone tell me where to get a sealed box for this model? I am trying to look around but $70 dollars for a box? Nu-uh! Diaphragm Material : Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Magnetic Weight : 129.6oz. Mounting Depth (top mount) : 178mm (7”) Mounting Diameter (top mount) : 348.6mm (10-7/8”) Recommended Box Types : Sealed/Vented/Bandpass Recommended Sealed Box Volume : 1.3 – 2.3 cu. ft. Spider Material : Nomex Voice Coil Diameter : 50mm uochronos on 01/3/2004 22:09:33 great choice the 15's are pretty nice subs... i personaly have the 2 10's... i like to get the higher bass frequencies too... anyway i would suggest building your own box for 5-10$ in wood 4$ in screws 5$ in glue and about 2 hours of work you can build a box that well fit the speaker and your area perfect. also 10$ for paint or carpeting for said box... However if you want to buy a box i bought a R/T brand box from the local car audio place they make so many boxes that usualy they have one very close if not right in the recomended box size.... i paid 50$ for a dual 10" enclosure and it was only .1 over the size my speakers suggested. that amp well make the sub really move too. 600wats should be more then fine for it i have seen people way over power alpine type R's and not blow them... they are really durrable... not that you should way over power them:) Munchiesyumm on 01/3/2004 23:39:26 yea I am not good with wood. I wouldn't even think about making my own. I tried it once it was embaressing. I would like to order one online but I don't know where to look? swez on 01/4/2004 04:55:35 Good choice on sub and amp... plenty of SQL bass here and in the right box, should be very good. Have you looked at Sub Zone? One of the better made boxes I have seen on the net...here: H-151LQ 15" Sealed 3/4" MDF Box - 1.5cf $59.99 Picture: http://www.subzoneusa.com/images/h-151lq%20dimensions.jpg Single 15" sealed If you add ~1.5 lbs of poly fill to this enclosure, it will be crisp, tight bass and the sub will see ~1.65 cf enclosure. Swez PS This is from: http://www.zebaudio.com Munchiesyumm on 01/4/2004 05:38:35 cool! thanks swez! man I was just looking at poly fill today but I forgot where!? It's the stuff you put in the box right it's suppose to improve SQ where can I look for it? thankz for the help swez! I learn something new from you everyday! Munchiesyumm on 01/4/2004 05:51:30 I emptyed out my paypal account only $2.73 cents but every cent counts! yay SMILE I donated! Munchiesyumm on 01/4/2004 16:59:20 I found out! Q: What's Poly-Fill and how will it affect my subwoofer's sound? A: You're probably already familiar with Dacron polyester fiber-fill, or Poly-Fill — chances are you've slept on a pillow stuffed with this material. But you may not realize how Poly-Fill can help your bass. Stuffing your enclosure with the right amount of Poly-Fill can make your box behave like it's larger than it really is. This comes in handy if the volume of the box you've built turns out to be a hair shy of the cubic air space recommended for your subwoofer. Depending on how much Poly-Fill you use, you can actually vary perceived box volume by as much as 30%. You can also "stuff it" if you simply don't have room in your vehicle for the larger box your sub demands. And adding Poly-Fill to any enclosure can clean up your bass by minimizing unwanted box resonances — and at a reasonable cost. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ndbM0KVBuW2/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=027808 $8 bucks for 1 pound Munchiesyumm on 01/4/2004 19:36:50 how about this stuff? http://www.threadart.com/D/tspf12.asp Polyester Fiberfill Poly-Fil Product by Fairfield 12 oz package of polyester fiberfill. it's only $3.00 Munchiesyumm on 01/4/2004 19:48:21 wait a second... The JBL 600.1 puts out 300 x 1 4ohm The sub is 500watts RMS 4ohm They make 2 models the same thing except one is 2 ohm and the other is 4 ohm. The amp won't push the sub that well sense it's only 300 watts 4ohm and the sub takes 500 they only sell the 4ohm one for 179 at www.ikesound.com the other model can be found but for more money err!!! Ebay is more exspensive too! Do I need to start looking at some other options. What I really am going after is SQ Iove the tight clean bass but I also like the impressions of a nice bass line. I know theirs ton's subs out there but I was looking for something to fit in the SQL. The alpine seemed to work out but the 2 ohm verstion is a lot more exspensive. kiaman on 01/5/2004 02:32:09 guaranteed the jbl amp will put more power to the sub than 300w, remeber the rateings on the amp? 12.4v, plus they are underrated, check the birthsheet when you get the amp, the adjust for about 13.4v and see how many Watts you would be pushing. or could get the 2ohm version and keep the gains down low. remeber, this is also all box dependent Munchiesyumm on 01/5/2004 02:36:59 SubZone HC15SS (slant back) Internal Volume= 1.9 cu. ft. MDF Construction $57.63 both are from http://www.gadgetpros.com/suh1si15slba.html The only difference is the slant box is slightly larger 1.9 cubic feet but why is there such a dramatic price difference? kiaman on 01/5/2004 02:41:31 ^you answered it for yourself^ Munchiesyumm on 01/5/2004 02:43:13 oh lol yeahh I figured there might be some advantage or disadvantage to the slant box. Usually nothing is what it seems okay wow 25 dollar shipping.. lol.. forget that so the box is back up to $58 I guess theres no avoiding it the box is going to be 60 dollars kiaman on 01/5/2004 02:44:52 some people will say there is an advantage, they say that a square box (or rectangle) does something to the back wave the reduces the SQ of a sub, very very very doubtfull tho imo. Munchiesyumm on 01/5/2004 02:48:21 k thanks man! Very helpful! appreciated.. hey btw why aren't you a gold! kiaman on 01/5/2004 02:50:36 cuz. i just started here, havent really ben posting much. i dunno, maybe one day -edit- also, i dont have nearley as much knowlage as cplkittie, swez, ttocs or any of the other golds. (can you just feel the lips on your guys buttox?) erikcooper on 01/5/2004 09:59:55 I am still confused on why it owuld be $24 less for a BIGGER box. that is just odd... Munchiesyumm on 01/5/2004 19:22:02 because the other one is 5 dollar shipping and the salant back is 30 dollar shipping lol.. sure! PS. No one knows more than swez!
