Hey I've been reading a lot on here about getting better alternators and batteries, instead of using caps. Well I just bought a 1 farad cap a few months back as per Crutchfield's recomendations for a problem I had. It didn't fix the main prob, but made my lights stop dimming slightly. Anyway, that problem has been fixed by other posts here. My question is: Where do you find the better alternators and what kind of battery and alternator would you recomend for my system: 4 channel amp putting out 75 watts RMS per channel going to 2 front speakers that are rated at up to 90w RMS, 500w RMS (when wired in parallel) mono sub amp running to 2 10" subs that are rated at 250w RMS each (wired in parallel). I plan on upgrading to better subs that are rated at around 400w RMS each and, of course, will be upgrading my amp to one that can put out at least 800w RMS with a 2 ohm load. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota, and I called a dealer who told me that I have the same alternator that would be in a Dodge Ram with a tow package (don't know if I believe him). Any suggestions? Replies (4) uochronos on 12/29/2003 21:00:35 well you can get a better alternator from the dealer usauly, a parts store, or a alternator shop. my friend actualy runs his on electrical shop and there main product is custom alternators. you can probaly find a shop like this in your town... i dont believe you have the same alternator as a Ram with a tow package or dodge uses really small alternators(i'm not really into dodge so i dont know for sure) but i have a 2003 Ford Ranger and my stock alternator and batery keep my phoenix gold tantrum 500.2 amp running fine the only time my lights even dim is when its idling and my system is turned way up and the heater/air is on max. so i would assume that if you got just a slightly larger then stock alternator that it would hold your current system say 125amp or so or even get a smaller pulley for your current system this will cuase it to put out more power at lower RPM. Keeping your batery charged up better when idling. alanjlamore on 12/29/2003 21:50:07 Thanks, I'll try to look for some one around here for the alternator when I get ready to upgrade my system. Is there any place to buy them online, and how would I know if it would work in my vehicle? swez on 12/29/2003 22:28:27 There are online shops that offer Stinger and Ohio Generator products. Some of these can take you up to 300A. of current but are VERY EXPENSIVE !!! A google search will help you find them. That 4 channel amp will pull ~40A or so at full power. The 500 watt amp will pull ~65A... so your ALT should be ready to handle close to 150A. for this system and maybe an 800 CCA rated battery. The car/truck will operate normally on about 50-60A. Not all that big a deal and a good OEM truck ALT may be able to handle that load with some minor tweaks as noted earler. (Ie: smaller ALT pulley, larger CCA BAT and larger than stock power wires) Hope that helps... ask around the local car parts shops and see what will fit into that truck. Swez cplkittle on 12/30/2003 18:12:34 would the old single wire alternators (constant charge) work in newer cars as a second or added on alternator? Swez?
