are these subs any good? i know PG used to be the shizznittle back in the day.....the subs have decent specs....boasts a really small encoluser .65 - 1.1 square ft...and these are 15's!!they wont fit in the kia...but i might buy em friday if the auction is still available....cuz i think im gettin rid of the kia soon for a larger car (just want a larger car for the larger trunk....for larger speakers, no kidding!!!) plus im tired of the puny lil 4 cyl. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Replies (34) ttocs on 12/25/2003 10:16:43 those are really awsome.... You would not regret them. cplkittle on 12/25/2003 11:58:27 I'd find room in the kia ;) who needs back seats anyway? lol Merry Christmas to you too, and everyone. kiaman on 12/25/2003 14:08:33 thanks! now these arnt the ultimate's they are just the regulars the ones that handle 650w rms are they still good? lol compvr15s on 12/25/2003 18:52:14 i have no experience with them but im sure they will get loud. 650w/rms isnt bad. not sure on thier sq but i bet the spl is fairly high. uochronos on 12/25/2003 22:51:47 I heard a set of those down at the local car audio shop and even in the show room they sounded nice alot of spl and not lacking much in the SQ department at all. the new Phoenix gold octane R speakers are a great spl sub too they do lack slightly in the SQ area but none the less a good sub. phoenix gold is really puting alot of effort into there subs in the past year. kiaman on 12/26/2003 00:03:19 ok baught the subs......i need some more help...lol...i want a box to be ready for them when they arrive...im gonna throw em in my boys car when they get here to test em out (only gonna be puttin 500w to therm total) I wanna build a ported box for 60/40 mix of spl/sq (most popular lol) T/S Parameters FS: 26.21 Hz RE: 1.75 ohms Qms: 9.26 Qes: 0.594 Qts: 0.558 Vas: 114.63 liters Mms: 283.15 Grams Cms: 130 uM/Newton BL: 10.89 Tesla-M SPL(1W/1M): 88db Sd: 792 sq cm Xmax (field): 36.2mm p-p i modeled this up in WINISD with 1200w and like 2.4cf per sub 2 ports @ 35hz and the spl peaked at like 130db...now for 2 15's in a ported box w/1200w...this seems to be very low in a couple weeks im going to be buying a JBL BP1200.1 to run em....need fmod @35hz im guessing.... ah i got side tracked...but needed information none the less.....ok...can anyone that is more fimilar with winisd please model this up for me? and give me some box sisez that will give me the 60/40 mix i am looking for? thanks again! i love this site kiaman on 12/26/2003 00:20:34 ooo..one more thing....what sise ports should i get? 4"? cplkittle on 12/26/2003 01:29:33 I am not sure I can give you a recommendation on the 60/40 issue, in general, a ported box gives you a 3db increase in spl, but at the cost of accuracy (not really a loss in SQ, that depends more on the speaker). As far as the port length, there are three important factors that are all related in some einstein equational way. A larger port will require a longer length, but lower the air velocity of the port; whereas a smaller port will shorten the length of the port, and raise the air velocity, and to throw in another wrench into the equation, the box size also alters all three of these. Use winisd to find the sizes that will work for you, There is also alot of information in the thread I started 'frequency recommendation' that may help you out as well. cplkittle on 12/26/2003 01:55:18 With an EBP of 44.1, a sealed or 4th order bandpass box is recommended with this sub, (<50-sealed, 50-90 optional, 90+ported) However, if you still want to go with ported, try this with winisd, and anyone more familiar with this program, please correct me if I am wrong.. I have had Winisd for 1 week, and am still learning the program. 3^ft volume 20 Hz tuned freq 2 round ports (3.5" dia) (40"length ea.) 600w @ 2ohm This keeps your spl between 105 and 120 constantly. cone excursion peaks at 35mm @ 16Hz and 42Hz (36.2mm max) port air velocity at 20Hz is 33Mph Now you will need to agressively filter all frequencies below 20 Hz because the cone excursion and port air velocity go off the charts around 16Hz. (18db/octave should do) You may want to go with the bass cube : http://www.phoenixgold.com/basscube.html kiaman on 12/26/2003 03:13:50 yea, i still wanna go with ported, banpass boxes are one note wonders....and sealed wont suck the air out of you, ported is a very different style which i like, and with 1200w's im gunna be greedy GRIN now that 3 ft.....is that cubed or squared?....and also i baught 2 of these bad boys.....so im guessing 6ft eh? 4 round ports....1200w @1ohm now the 40" length x 4....thats huge.....so the box is gonna have to be even bigger to account for the displacement...not to mention the displacement of the subs....i wish i wasnt so impulsive in clicking that damned buy it now button. ok......maybe i will go sealed just to save the headach.....this would have ben my first attempt at building a ported box....but the more i read...the more my head hurts. I dunno...im gunna complante it for a little wile.....thankz for the help cpl cplkittle on 12/26/2003 03:41:07 you could always do one of each, and remember on winisd, it dosen't have a button for seperate air chambers, so all of your configurations should be on one speaker in its own chamber with its own RMS wattage etc... You could use square or slotted ports as well if you wanted. This may increase the length, but you can always bend and twist the port throughout the inside of the box as well as outside. ttocs on 12/26/2003 09:19:31 I don't think there will be much problem with spl when you put to 15"s in a kia........... Sealed sounds better imo... kiaman on 12/26/2003 13:46:21 i wish i could put them in the kia for the time being, but i cant, i highley doubt they will fit, i barley got a single 12 to fit in there once.....small box to, but barley fit none the less...o well gtg to work....c-ya compvr15s on 12/26/2003 14:41:24 the '04 rios have 9.2^ft if space in the trunk. i dunno how much different it is from your year, but probably not much, should easily be able to get 2 15s in the trunk, and still have room left over, and if not can use backseat to carry the things that wont fit in the trunk. may be awkward to get the box to fit, may need to be custom build since the rear deck lid is probably less that the 16 inchs that the box needs the be unless you face the subs upwards. but you can always extend the box out a few inches past the deck and then still have room to close your trunk, take some measurments and then you will actaully know what you have to work with. good luck kiaman on 12/26/2003 22:38:53 hmmmm....very very intresting.....it was the deck that gave me trouble when fitting the 12 in.....as i dont have my kia at the moment (death in the family dad had to drive it to Ga) and i got his el camino, but when he gets back, monday or tuesday, ill break out the ole tape measure, and measure the trunk to see. thanks! cplkittle on 12/27/2003 03:10:04 Sorry to hear about that, one of my distant cousins lost his grandmother on the 23rd, it's tough around the holidays. kiaman on 12/28/2003 01:25:52 thanks cpl, it was his brother, i wish i could have gone, but I couldnt get any days off of work. the 23ed was when he died, wierd. but, on a lighter topic. i was thinking about this. and if there is enough room in the kia, the subs will be going in there. i will be ordering the JBL 1200.1 in two weeks, do you think it will be safe for my electrial system to run the amp @4ohms to only get 600rms to the subs? this will only be for now as when i get another car i will upgrade the electrial system to handle the 1ohm operation and the 114a of draw this amp pulls. at the moment, i dont know the CCA rateing of my battery, or the ammperage my atl. is rated for, im sure its not anything big as my 300w class a/b Alpine makes the lights dim slightly at full volume. also, if i hook up the jbl, then i will have no amp to run the CDT's off of, do you think it will be ok to run them off the HU? (JVC KD-LX111) and do you think they will be able to keep up with the 15's? (i was going to remove the 6x9's because of their low power rateing) im starting to regret the phurchace of the PG's they look halfway decent, but then i look at their effiency (88db 1w/1m) and it seems pretty low for 15's. I dont know, there wont be any way to tell until i hook em up to see how they sound. I hate being an impulsive buyer :( cplkittle on 12/28/2003 15:46:02 underpowering a speaker is more hazardous to the speaker than overpowering it. If you do go with the 600w setup, listen carefully for clipping or distortion as this will ruin your subs. For your fronts, what happened to the alpine A/B amp? You can hook them up to the Kameleon (funny, same model I have in my kia), they will not be as loud, maybe a little overpowered by the bass. kiaman on 12/28/2003 16:59:17 yea, ill always listen for clipping, and as for the alpine......im still gonna have it, but i dont think my electrial system could handle the 1200.1 and the alpine. and i really dont want to spend any more money on this car as im planning to get another one. yea, dosnt this deck rock? its so polite, it tells me goodbye when i turn off my car, then it closes its eyes and goes to sleep lol. so, 600w to subs, 22w to 6.5's hmmmmmm wonder how it will sound.....may have to take the bass into the negitives for it to sound good......well see cplkittle on 12/28/2003 18:42:02 I think I got the ghetto version, mine says "see ya" when you turn it off. kiaman on 12/28/2003 18:46:40 yes...as does mine lol, its the first one says "goodbye" i think, not sure, fried it a long time agao. kiaman on 12/28/2003 21:39:30 swez/ttocs, you guys mind throwin in your 2 cents? do you think the front stage ran off the deck will be able to keep up with the subs? ahhhh so many options, i still may just say screw it and keep the subs till i get a different car, but i would love to have em in the kia for the time being! GRIN what to do what to do what to do........ cplkittle on 12/28/2003 22:23:57 What was the voice coil config again? could you put one in the kia at 4ohm 600w in a sealed box? That might not be as bad (overpowering) kiaman on 12/29/2003 00:04:53 dual 4 ohm, so i could only run it at 2 or 8.....like u didnt know that lol. thats a thought tho, just puttin one in the kia, but then id have to buy a different amp....hmmmm then i could sell that amp here for double what i paid for it...lol, people dont really know bout online shopping that much lol. man, i love you cpl....u rule. thats what im going to do, if i dont change my mind again, 1 of them, sealed box, jbl600.1, big boom, but how much do you think ill gain over the MTX 10's, would the gain even be worth the effort? kiaman on 12/31/2003 22:40:59 schelued delivery is for the 6th. slow shipper on e-bay......o well...i can wait. cplkittle on 01/1/2004 02:11:49 I compared 2 audiobahn 10's svc 400w@4ohms ported at 40Hz and came up with this...... You will have a 10-15dB increase over the 10's with the 15 until you reach around 60Hz and above, then you have about 10dB increase over the 15 with the 2 10's kiaman on 01/1/2004 02:32:27 really now, thats intresting, 400 w to each or 400 w to 1? and against just 1 15? with 600rms? cplkittle on 01/1/2004 02:36:25 400w to each 10 ported against 600w to 1 PG15 sealed. kiaman on 01/1/2004 02:43:17 ok, thats a little more understandable.....but one thing about winisd, it is not 100% accutate, that still dosnt make much sence though, it takes like 4-5 10's to match the cone area of one 15......(depending on driver of course) plus those are 10's so they will be more efficent at playing the higher frequencies.....so i dunno, ill see how one sounds in the kia with 600w, if i dont like it im sure i could sell them for what i baught them for.... cplkittle on 01/1/2004 02:49:08 the 10s are louder above 60Hz by up to 10dB plus you are getting +6dB increase for the 10's (+3 for being ported, and another +3 for having 2 of them) If you have the 2 MTX10s, seal them and port the 15, if you can match the ohms to 1 or 2ohms for the 1200.1 since there is no loss/gain in the 1 or 2 ohm configuratin on that amp, this might be possible, and you could better distribute the power of the 1200w, saving the 15 from overpowering it. This would give you bone rattling, tight bass at 60-120Hz from the 10's, and frequencies that drop below human hearing levels that you can only feel from the 15. then you would only have to worry about retightening all the bolts in your car every week. kiaman on 01/1/2004 03:01:29 i thought the +3db increase wasnt because of haveing 2 drivers, but because of haveing double the cone area....and where did the mtx's come in, you where talking about audiobahn 10's before...lol cplkittle on 01/1/2004 22:49:23 I didn't have the specs on any MTX drivers, so I compared them to the audiobahn 10s I had specs on, just for a general comparison. You gain +3dB when you add a second driver (+3dB=2xVolume) I am not sure I understand exactly how - if it is basically doubling the cone area, or if there is more involved. kiaman on 01/2/2004 01:21:26 im prety sure it is when you double the cone area.....but like i said before, i cant run the jbl1200.1 in the kia, it wont take it.....so im going to go with one 15, sealed, jbl600.1 @ 2 ohms.......swez/ttocs, someone please chime in here and clear up any confusion there might be kiaman on 01/6/2004 16:18:14 ok, just got the subs, they look prety decent, well built, a lil on the heavy side....shiny GRIN....box is going to end up being 1.45ft cubed for one. with the jbl600.1, im going to build the box sunday probally. and the amp should be here saturday. im going to order thursday from ikesound. and it only takes 1 day to get here from davie.so hopefully by next week ill have some better bump in the ride GRIN Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
