Hey guys, havent posted here in a while. You might or might not remember me as the Australian guy who was having trouble looking for a new amp / sub to replace his tired old underpowered and sloppy Kenwood set up. Well problem is i still am :) I want to get quality equipment, that will give good SQL for the rock music i usually listen to and still sound respectable when i wanna play something more bass intensive (hip hop for example). I was thinking of going with JL Audio as they have a reputation for quality, and the 12W0 4 is well priced. Does anyone have experience with this sub woofer? Can anyone reccomend other subwoofers that are similarily priced? Ill be putting it in a sealed box. Also im not sure if i need a new amp to go with it. Can anyone tell me if my current sub Amp (KenwoodKAC-5201) can effectively power this or a similar sub? Or will i need yo upgrade? If i have to upgrade how about a Cadence Q2000 or a coustic 161SE? or should i go for a more powerful amp? Thanks bigtime to anybody who can help! Jarrod. Replies (5) uochronos on 12/18/2003 13:14:57 I personaly have 2 alpine type R 10" subs for the price they give extremly good SQ and they well still put out alot of bass for hip hop and rap type stuff. i too listen mostly to rock and these subs keep up with slipknot and rob zombie type music great. i have these powered by a phoenix gold tantrum series 500.2 amplifier. and they compliment each other very nicely. you can get a set of these subs off ebay for 200$ new and the amp on ebay for around 230$ this amp puts out really great quality. although if you went with a single Alpine type R you could use the amp you have... although if your going for SQ the amp can affect that. by the way i saw the sub you listed was a 12" sub and tyou can get the alpines in 12" for 29$ more. although most people are surprised when they find out that my 10s arent bigger for how much they can put out. Swez on 12/18/2003 22:08:09 Welcome back Jarrod... That (Kenwood) is a very modest amp. When bridged mono into a 4 ohm sub load, you get a tad over 100 watts RMS. If the sub you choose is very efficient (90 dB @ 1watt/1 meter) and used a ported or bandpass enclosure, not too bad of output... but you may want more power if you go with a JL sub. JL is a very high quality product... amps & subs... but their subs demand a good amount of power to make them shout. A very good SQL sub... but very expensive in Aussieland I would bet? (dunno) Actually, (looked up this sub rating) the 12W0, 4 ohm is a good match for your present amp. It will handle 100 - 150 watts RMS just fine. If you wanted more thump later, can always get a 2nd matching sub and up the power amp ratings accordingly. The upside of this deal is a quality sub that will deliver decent SPL, great SQ using a modest amp. You can always add more later if you wish, but not have to kill your wallet, stress your car electricals or your ears. The Cadence brand amp is definitely a step up from Kenwood. I don't have the specs handy on that product #... but yes, a very high quality product here as well. I don't know much about Coustic products but my general read is they are not in the same league as Cadence, JBL, JL, Kicker or other better amp brands. Swez PS The Alpine R series, Infinity Reference or Kappa 4 ohm subs are more than a match (300+ RMS/sub) for your present amp. All of these subs do come in 4 ohm SVC or various DVC models. Also very good SQL subs here and probably less cost than a JL12W0. They are also a bit more efficient so it takes less power to get them pumping as compared to most JL subs I have looked at. Jarrod on 12/23/2003 08:23:57 Had a brainwave the other night. Was thinking about this and realised that i have the power i need, im just not using it effiecently. Ive checked the manuals and my MTX amp (currently powering 4 speakers) can actually get considerably more power from the two bridged rear channels than my kenwood amp can make in total. So i think i will bridge the two rear channels of my MTX amp into the JL (yes, expensive, but no more so than infinity or alpine suprisinngly enough), that should conservatively give me 150 watt RMS to play with. Then i can use my 2 x 40 watt RMS Kenwood amp to run the (40 watt nom) rear speakers. Thanks for the advice guys. Merry Xmas everyone. and have fun shopping for car audio bits and pieces in the post xmas sales. Jarrod. Swez on 12/23/2003 11:37:21 Yep, that will work and 150 RMS to a single JL-WO sub is fine. Just make sure you have a 4 ohm sub when bridging your MTX 4 channel. The Kenwood amp should be fine for your rear speakers too.... not a bad power rating for rear fill speakers. Use the HP filter for rears. Set at about 60-80 Hz. Merry "Christ"-mas Jerrod... It's a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ Jesus I am wishing same to you personally.... It's not politically correct here in the USA... but I have never bought into political correctness mindset anyway. The old saying goes... I we don't take a stand for something, we'll fall for just about anything. Cheers, Swez Jarrod on 12/23/2003 11:54:05 Yeah fair call. Christmas it is. Cant say i personally am all that religous, but that doesnt mean the christians should have their celebration taken away from them due to sheer political correctness. Jarrod.
