| HELP, car speaker ?by dmeyers Front Page * FAQ Forum * Archive Index Prev :: Nexthey guys i just signed up for this board, and i have a question. i want to pull out my 6.5" speakers, 2 10" subs, and amp from my car, and hook it up inside so i can play MP3's from my laptop on it in my room. but how? and is it possible. thank you very much. Replies (7) ttocs on 04/19/2003 17:06:51 you need to get a ac-dc pwr converter. Depending on the amp size they go from expensive, to stuped $$$$... Swez on 04/19/2003 17:53:01 A lot of work to do what you are proposing as ttocks said, need a power supply for 12 volts to power the subs etc. Do you have a Compact stereo system available. If yes, just plug your computer sound card output into the AUX input of your Mini stereo and Viola... you have MP3 in your room. You will have to make up a patch cord with mini 2 channel (headphone style) jack to computer and RCA cables (L&R) channels to your stereo. They may have premade jobs at Radio Shack, WalMart or BB, CC. Swez admin on 04/19/2003 20:06:06 Also refer to this Article, "Car Audio at Home" Walt dmeyers on 04/20/2003 12:33:11 yes that what i did now. but my shelf stereo isn't that loud. so i need a AC-DC converter for powering of the subs, is that the most expensive thing i need? my amp is 600Watt Kenwood, what kind of converter will that need? and i will just hook up the subs to the amp. but how will the 4-6.5"'s be powered?? thanks again. Buickman94 on 04/20/2003 17:53:53 I fooled around with this idea a while ago and found it really wasnt worth it. I used a car battery and a charger rather then an AC/DC converter...it worked, but looked sloppy and was a pain. I didnt have subs, just 6x9s and they were in boxs which made it a little easier. I would recomend some kind of enclosure for the 6.5s or some way to secure them. As for powering the 6.5s... i wounder, and someone check me on this casue i just pulled this outta me @$$.... I know theres a speaker and AUX out on most sound cards. If you could somehow souder the spearers to a 1/8in adaptor and plug them directly into the laptop. I dont know how well that would work becuase most comp. speakers are powered, and i assume that the comp doesnt put out that many watts. I also ahve no idea what the impedence is. megahurts4 on 04/20/2003 19:49:26 Bad idea. That would damage the speakers if you cranked them up, even to normal listening levels. The output from soundcards isn't usually greater than 2-5 watts. The 1/8" jacks in the back for *most* sound cards: *top- line in *middle- microphone *bottom- speaker out The easiest thing to do would be to buy a 1/8" stereo to RCA Left and Right. Plug that into the speaker out and run an RCA patch cord from that to a home receiver to power the speakers. megahurts4 on 04/20/2003 19:58:28 Best solution, don't listen to MP3's hehe |
