HU settings query

Start New Question Here -- Back to TreeYear Make Model: 2007 Mazda 3 Page Views: 82Hey everyone, been a while since I've been here. Been busy back and forth with work, getting ready to deploy, etc.
My system is doing alright, still have my two Kenwood amps (4x pushing my doors, and mono pushing my Kenwood 12"...although I'm thinking about sticking two 10"s in there for better sound quality in the rock music genre than the 12 can permit...)
My question is actually for a friend. He's got one of the new Wal Mart Pioneer decks (not sure what the model is...) We hooked his speakers up like normal (he also has two 4x6" in the back dash that we added later, spliced into the rear speaker channels...) Ran RCAs to his amp, and ran the subwoofer that way. He called me today and said when he would cut the low pass filter on for the sub, it would shut the rear speaker channel off.
My guess is that his CD player has the RCA jack for the sub wired into the rear channel, and when he cuts the LPF on (on the deck, not the amp) that it shuts the signal to the rear speakers. I've never heard of that, but then again I've never bothered to be in the situation or heard of someone cutting the LPF on from the deck, instead of the amp.
Is that how things are supposed to be, or could there be an issue with the CD player? I told him if he wanted to have his LPF settings on for the deck, to wire all the speakers to the front channel and have the rear strictly for the subwoofer. He likes that idea, although I don't see why he doesn't leave the CD player on full instead of turning the LPF on, and just have that at the amp....Reply Posted: 10/28/2009 18:45:45 by: ![]()

Hey Zan... welcome back to CK!
Some budget players have only 1 pair of RCA's for outboard subs. The front and rear channels are powered by the internal HU amps only and are usually full range.
Some also have a rear/sub select function and LPF for the sub only feature. He needs to read his manual for details on how to set up his menus for the configuration mode he is using.
Hope that helps,
Swez
PS When do you redeploy and where to this time around?

His has three RCAs, one for front, one for rear, one for SW (most obvious guess is sub..) Apparently he figured out something about how you could hook some subs to the rear channel and turn it on LPF and have an amp-free extra bump (or something like that...)
Heading to MOB station in January, from there going to southern Iraq for awhile. Shouldn't be too bad, I hope. :)
When I get back, I'll be building a new system. The kenwood setup in the mazda will be staying there, but I'll be getting another car (bought a YZF600R a couple months ago as my main mode of transportation before I go, wife drives the car...) My plan is to get either a mid 90's 300zx or a early 04-05 350z when I get back... On that, I'll be going all out. Haven't quite figured out what all I'll be incorporating yet, depends on the vehicle and what I can find to sound good in it. I'm figuring a single DVC 12" 2 OHM @ 600-800 RMS should sound quite nice, paired with some JBL or similar quality components. Wouldn't happen to have any suggestions for subs and amps to get that goal, would you? I haven't even really started looking yet, figured here would be a good place to start. :)Reply Posted: 10/31/2009 07:57:32 by: ![]()

A nice JBL/Infinity system would be a great thing to focus on. Both are sibling brands under the Harman Intl Group of audio products and easy to find all your amp and speaker/sub needs in one package brand.
Both vendors offer quality Comps and subs and a variety of amplifier options to satisfy the most demanding of audiophiles. Check out JBL's website for car audio products. You may find their vintage gear to be most affordable and having a wider range of options.
